Steve,
If your assembly needs 20Mb, it just needs
it.
Inventor does provide you with a number of tools
that will allow you to impact your performance.
For example, if you don't need to see everything in
your 20Mb assembly you can save a named design view and subsequently open the
assemblyusing that design view and you should see some
improvements.
You should also make sure that you have your
virtual memory/swap settings high enough.
How your files are located on disc/server shares
and how your project files are set-up will also impact your opening
times.
It is pretty amazing how fast large assemblies open
today compared to what was the "norm" ten years ago.
It is also amazing at how quickly our expectations
change relative to what should be "normal" performance 😉
The folks here can help you with making sure your
set-up is optimized.

Hello
to you all,
Anybody know how to reduce the size of an inventor file.
I
have a 20mb assembly file. This takes about 2 mins to
load. Also the
drawing file takes ages to load as well.
Any suggestions?
