Spaceball question (problem in drawings)

I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to fix the following
Spaceball behavior I experience all the time while in drawings.

When I pam and zoom with the spaceball while in a drawing,
Inventor does not always COMPLETELY refresh the graphics
when I stop moving the spaceball. If I keep nudging the spaceball
I can eventually get Inventor to kick in and refresh everything, but
I have also noticed that if I click my mouse in the drawing window,
it will force a refresh too. What I'd like is for Inventor to completely
refresh the graphics without requiring these mouse clicks. This only
happens in drawings, models and assemblies have no problem.

Please don't suggest updating my drivers, as I believe I have the latest
version which supports my Spaceball 2003 model.

TIA,
Bob

I have the exact condition.

Dell M50, P4 @ 1.8 Ghz, 1 Gb DDRSDRAM, Quadro 4 700 GoGl 64 Mb, HP Model A4361C Spaceball.

I just don't touch the Spaceball when working on an .idw.

64MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 with TV Out, Bios version 4.25.0029 (4.25.00.29.24)
Driver version number 6.13.10.2911
Computer: Dell Dimension 8200 P4 512MB

I notice we also have a GeForce4 MX 440 SE graphics card in storage. Would this be a better card
to install, or not?

If this happens, nudge the middle button on your mouse. What is
happening is that Inventor has done some graphics optimizing and does
not know that you have stopped using the Spaceball. A simple middle
button depress and move will cause a pan operation to be sent to
Inventor. The moment you let go of the MB, Inventor will redraw.
Presenter has the same problem with moving camera views so I suspect it
has something to do with the whole interface for those types of devices.

I liked the way the older SpaceMouse driver worked with AutoCAD/MDT. Maybe
someone else recalls this as well. In the configuration, it had checkbox
labeled "refire" or "redraw" or something - I can't remember exactly what it
said - but it would force AutoCAD/MDT to do a redraw when the driver
detected that there was no longer any force on the SpaceMouse. That's
exactly what we need in Inventor.

by the way - the "driver" for AutoCAD/MDT was simply an ARX file
(magellan.arx, if I'm not mistaken). This was what caused the redraw - not
the "actual" 3dconnexion driver.

Spaceball on a laptop, you must have a bigger carying case then me, only use my ball with workstation.

I am now using a Traveller but before, I was carrying a full size 4000
flx with my M50. I do have a large case, in fact, I have a couple as I
usually have one heading to the repair shop. I think you will find that
a full size space ball tucks in nicely.

Do you disable the Z axis in IDW's?
Ah drop the frame rate and up the transition?

I take it you have to disable the Z axis in the 3dxware driver?
Would that consist of unchecking "Enable Rotations"? OR would
I have to also disable TZ translations (I would think that would
affect zooming)?

I will try your suggestions next time I have to work in a drawing
(probably sometime today)

You can set disable Z axis pan a assign a button to it (spacemouse, same
driver?) if I knock up the frame rate my images disappear and come back when
you click on the drawing.
For me the frame rate seems to be the key.
Driver functions "Pan only"

Ti 4200 is hands down the better card by a landslide. Your drivers are as up to date as an abacus though. Unfortunatly with the Geforce line of cards the latest drivers seem to be worse than the old ones unless you do the SoftQuadro trick. If you feel savy enough you could back up your system, get the latest (9-22-2003) hardware lib, and Softquadro a later set of drivers. Then again you can go to www.microx-press.com and get a quadro4 550 XGL for 115 bucks.

That would speed up your system but it won't solve your idw rotation issue.
