Yep, lots of us use the spaceball. Mines quite old, a 3003FLX but I love it
and it was only 30-odd dollars on ebay 2nd hand (but I'm told that driver
support for these old ones might drop off soon, so get a more recent one).

right hand-plain corded logitech mouse. left hand-Nav 3D controller. Way faster than using rotate buttons for adding constraints/ navigating. Only problem is that I need another hand for my XLDD Tim Hortons!

Right hand: Microsoft Wheel Mouse - cheap, but the best I've ever used.
For wrist support a 3M WR511 - took care of my mouse arm damage.
Left hand: Logicad 3D Magellan SpaceMouse - excellent performance boost over
the orbit command.

The Future Is Now. The latest drivers from 3Dconnexion no longer
support my Spaceball 2003 or 3003 models. The last version I have
which did was 3DxWare 3.4.0 Build 3. From the latest driver readme's:

3DxWare for Windows version 3.5 Build 15

September 29, 2003
Windows XP (RC2), Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0 SP6, Windows Me
...
NOTES FROM PREVIOUS RELEASES

From 3.4.3
The SpaceTraveler is now supported.

During installation, SpaceBall 2003, 3003 and Cyberman users are directed to an
upgrade page.

I plan on keeping my 2003 and 3003 spaceball's until they either break or are
no longer recognized by the software I use. Also note that although their web
page states they will continue supporting these devices until March 2004, when
I try to download specific drivers for these devices, I am re-directed to an upgrade
form. Good thing I keep my old downloads.

Right hand: Wacom tablet (pen-pad), type ET-0405-R. I prefer that to any
mouse i have tried so far.

Left hand: Logicad 3D Magellan SpaceMouse

I would go for a similar setup anytime!

I have a 12x12 Kurta tablet in my makeshift computer museum. Was
used for Personal Designer from 4D Graphics. Don't even think I could
find any kind of driver for that, if it even still works!

I find it hard to see the similarity between a slim 93 x 128 mm (active
area) pad with a pressure-sensitive, cordless and ergonomically designed pen
and a 12x12 inch monster like the Kurta.......(I have also used Wacom's
12x12's in ancient times, but not as a general mouse replacement - only for
CAD)

I can only say that the switch from mouse to penpad is one of the reasons
why I am still in business. Occasionally I am forced to use a mouse for a
few hours, and it takes just a few hours before the old mouse strain
symptoms show up again

Regarding drivers, I have had no problems with NT4.0, Win2k or XP.

Oh, did I mention that the wife and daugter loves theirs as well?

Regards
Peter

Can you not see the similarity between a sleek ultra modern sports car and a old junky
stationwagon? They are both cars. Likewise, your pen pad and my Kurta are both
pen based digitizing pads, are they not?. Your mention of your sleek new pad merely
made me reminiscent of my old Kurta tablet.

Right hand Logitech Cordless Mouseman Wheel, left hand Logitech Magellan
Spacemouse.
Microsoft probably produce better quality mice, my IntelliMouse is proof to
that, only right handers need apply of course......now discontinued.
I can think of three occasions when I have had cramp in my mouse hand.
1 Painting the house,
2 Hand driving in at least 77000 M 2.5 x 4mm brass slotted screws, $55 /
hour last time round!
3 And slugging though the Inventor WC.......no kidding.
You can get by without the spacemouse/ball but if you need to get a move on
it relieves your right hand of the oribble IV pan rotate and zoom needed for
assembly constraints and quick modelling.
I am sure some of the Sean's get cramp in both hands but I will never get
that good........:^(
You need the wrist support for sure, my mouse pad cuts into my wrist so I
improvised with a cut down sock slid over my wrist for now. That's all
folks!!!!
