SolidWorks into Inventor

I am trying to import an IGES file of  hydraulic cylinder that has been modelled in Solidworks.

It imports ok exept the parts are transperant and you cant select them and also the constraints are lost.

Is there something I can ask the engineer at the hydraulics company to do before he exports the IGES file to make it import into IV better. Or would it be better for him just to do a packngo and send the native Solidworks files?

Attached is a snipe of the screen.

That's because they have come in as surfaces.  You can try stitch command to create a solid (maybe need to repair in construction environment) or ask for stp or solidworks file.  You wont get any constraints or features though.

I assume you are buying the cylinder and just need it in your model for reference so it would probably be faster to just model a simple cylinder yourself in Inventor.  That way you can have all the motion & constarint control you need.

Hi AnthonyPaul2010,

Thanks for your report!

From your attached image, it only has surfaces. When you import the IGES file, please check if Solids, Wires or Points are checked in IGES Import Options dialog box, also you can turn on "Auto Stitch and Promote" before import.

Also when the engineer at the hydraulics company exports the model to IGES, make sure Output Solid As option is Solids.

Kevin Li

Hey thanks for that Kevin.

That worked although the constraints were still lost but that easy to fix with basic components like hydraulic cylinders.

Constraints between CAD systems will always be lost, no way to traslate them through a generic file.

Please mark this response "Accept as solution" if it answers your question.
