When you created the sketch on the face of the octagon, it automatically
projected the edges of the face, since it is a closed loop, when you select
that sketch for your loft, you have two closed loops (the octagon and the
circle) on that sketch. After selecting the sketch, you simply have to
select which region you want to use in the loft.
