Sketch Properties

I am doing the Inventor 2014 tutorial "Format Sketch Blocks". Instruction #7 states, "On the ribbon, click Sketch tab > Format panel > Sketch Properties. There is no Sketch Properties to select. How can I open the Sketch Properties toolbar, which this non-existent button is supposed to open? I hope my version of Inventor 2014 isn't the only one missing this button. Thanks for any help!

I am kind of flying blind here and going from memory, because I do not have access to Inventor at the moment (not to mention 2014), but I seem to recall under the "View" tab on the ribbon a button that allows you to turn on/off certain ribbon tabs.  I would make sure that all is well there.  Then under the "Tools" tab "Add Ins" see if this command you are looking for is added.  See if any of these offer any solution.

Try right clicking on the sketch node in the browser instead.

I don't think it matters if I select Tile All because it shows the different panels required. Thanks!

I tried that, but clicking the node doesn't open the Sketch Properties toolbar that has a Formatting Toggle to switch between the default format associated with the block definition and the user format I applied.

Hi RH69,

Normally you would find this on the Sketch tab > Format panel, and then you might need to use the small black dropdown arrow to locate the Sketch Properties button:

Can you confirm that you don't see the Sketch Properties button in the drop down / flyout menu?

I hope this helps.

Hi Curtis,
I am using Inventor 2014 free student version. I cannot find Sketch Properties button after clicking the small black dropdown arrow by the Format panel. I even try to search the Sketch Properties command in ALL COMMANDS, but cannot find it.

Hi RH69,

I'm not sure what's going on. Can you post a screen shot and/or a file as JDMather suggests?

I hope this helps.

Hi RH69,

So it looks like Autodesk has changed somethings involving the Sketch Properties.

As far as I can tell the they have eliminated the Sketch Properties toolbar and have changed the Formatting Toggle button to what is now called the Restore Default Properties button.

And it appears that the Help files and the Tutorials have not been updated to reflect this change as is evident in the current content at these links:

http://help.autodesk.com/view/INVNTOR/2014/ENU/?guid=GUID-D4D34995-6995-4622-95C1-F34ACA5089C0

http://help.autodesk.com/view/INVNTOR/2014/ENU/?guid=GUID-24C597C7-940D-4F4A-85E2-A4B8A76FA688

I think Step 7 and 8 of the tutorial should read something like this:

7. On the ribbon, click Sketch tab >  Format panel
8. Click the Restore Default Properties button to switch between the default format associated with the block definition and the user format you applied. The default format displays when the toggle is selected.

I hope this helps.

Thank you Curtis,

Your explanation make sense.

Can I ask you for help if I have questions during my self-teaching of Inventor 2014?

Hi RH69,

My participation on this forum varies depending upon what I've got going on, which means there are times when I'm not on here very much, and other times when I get to participate quite a bit. So it's better that you ask questions directed to the group in general, rather than to address a single person.

But there are a great number of helpful and knowledgeable people on this forum, so feel free to ask any and all questions that you might have. I'm certain that someone will jump in and provide some answers. Just be sure to provide as many details as you can, as well as screen shots and example files, and so on, and you'll find that you'll get a better response to your questions.

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis

My students are having the same difficullty with Sketch Properties. In reviewing their problem, there is no Sketch Properties command available in Inventor. What it appears the Tutorial creator meant to indicate is thst the user can change the properties of the sketch entities using the linetype, color, and thickness by choosing the three pulldowns in the flyout and can modify the look of the sketch. By clicking the Restore Default Properties, the program will toggle between the default settings and the settings the user has changed. It seems to require pressing the Restore Default Properties ocon and the windowing or picking the items to be toggeled.

I have attached a clip of thee Format tab to help us understand.

For whatever it is worth -

I have never ever had a need to change sketch properties (in a part) and personally I think it is a mistake for a beginner tutorial to introduce this.  Forget you ever saw it and move on.
