Sketch Coordinate system?

I created a sheet metal shape (sketch 1), placing the coordinate system 0,0
at the location of a hole, to be placed in Sketch 2. Then setup a style and
created a Face. Returned to sketch mode. The coordinate system 0,0 moved to
a different location on Sketch 2. Why? Also, Is the sheet metal feature that
I created with Sketch 1, the "Base Feature"? Thanks, Bob

Why are you worried about the coordinate system? Sounds to me like you
might be trying to work like in AutoCAD. Each sketch creates its own
coordinate system, you can't set it up in one sketch and have it
automatically be in another. There is seldom any need (for me anyhow) to
worry about where the coordinate system is in a sketch....just as long as it
doesn't get unattached.

If you created a face off of Sketch 1 and it is the first thing in the
browser it is your base feature.

Hi Kent, I created a sheet metal panel in Autocad before I purchased
Inventor. I am trying to create a sheet metal part in Inventor 6. The
Autocad part was dimensioned, using the Ordinate Dimension system. The X and
Y datum's were located at a hole on the part. I located that same hole at
0,0 on the sketch grid when creating the Base Sketch. I did this, so I could
use the same dimensions that are on the Autocad drawing. But after creating
the base sketch using the Features Panel and returning to Sketch Mode, the
0,0 location on the sketch grid is located at the lower left corner of the
base sketch. Because of this, I can not place the other holes on the panel,
using that datum point. I had no problem placing the addition holes on the
base sketch, but I could not add the hole features using that sketch.
Because the 0,0 location changed, I have to re-calculate the dimensions to
the holes from that 0,0 position. Bob

So when you extruded the base feature (face) it had a hole in it? If so,
then make your next sketch, place the points for the holes, and dimension
the points from the hole. You can dimension from any projected feature to
any sketch element.

Actually from what I am envisioning of what you are saying I would make
everything right in sketch 1, and then share the sketch to punch the holes
and various shapes.

If you are still having trouble I can post a couple of methods to customer
files.

Or, Bob could bring in the autocad geometry into his Inventor sketch.

The important thing to realize Bob is that you will be working differently
in Inventor than in Autocad. Forget everything you've learned about origins
moving about - concentrate on the geometry and it's relationship to other
features. They only time you need to be concerned about the origin in a
sketch is with the base sketch and that's only if you want to use the origin
planes and axis to help locate the part in the assembly.
