Single Vault Project

I ask this in the Vault NG but did not get a reply yet so I thought I'd try here also.

So I have been messing with the Vault and trying to iron out how we will use it before putting it out to the masses. Note that we are a large group of independant machine developers and rarely work together on a design. Our designs go from simple fixtures to fully automated assembly stations. So to that point we have always just used the Single User Project approach and work in our respective home drives on the server. The only shared content would be the iParts, Templates, and Styles which are locationed on a server drive letter that only I have write access to.
So I am trying to see how using the Single Vault Project method could work for us and have some question for those using this out there (IV2009).

1) Creating a Vault Project: when I create a vault project IV wants to make the "workspace" a subdirectory of the directory I am pointing to for project folder under app options which in my case I have set to %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Inventor\. I would think that the working folder should be set to the one I set in Vault, %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Vault\, which I have set to enforce.

2) Virtual Folder: this is what I have set to the sub folder in my vault that the files for the current project are checked into and checked out from. I want the vault to have a directory structure that matches the production line and then the production station. I do not see how for each machone I can have the design use a different virtual folder without each design having it's own project.

For Vault, your workspace will be on your local drive (recommended). It will
contain the ipj(copy)

Can you post your data structure (folders)?

Dennis,

I am just developing the structure that I will use in the vault so I do not have something existing to post. So I just mocked up a quick pic of where I am heading with that structure (attached). Basically it will be broken down per production line and then per equipment. Each piece of equipment is an independant design with it's own subdirectory under it parent production line.

So in a single project situation I am not sure how to make that work. If we all use the same project and it points to a directory on the hard drive as the workspace, all checked out files will go there regardless of the production line or machine, what a mess. Also, since people move about the room, if your checked out files are not in your roaming profile they will not follow you. But if you point to a directory in the roaming profile that is per each person. I assume that if I use %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Vault\, IV will only put in the checked out design by that user, which would work. However I am not sure what virtual folder to set. If I set the VF to the root of the vault, will IV dublicate the directory structure from the vault to the users profile working area when an assembly is checked out?

Hi,
Will the single project file work for you?
You need to check this file out if you need to change this file, will you all use the same shortcuts? If when you’re all using vault and your not happy with the file structure, or project file, and you need to change things, you need to communicate to all, what you want to change. If project file, then check out change and check in, everyone then get the latest version. If its folders of file locations then c drives must be cleared first!
The cdrive maps exactly the vault.
See my snap shot.
Vault can be a little temperamental at times so keep it simple, one file out of place, could cause trouble. Roaming profiles? I think this could get a little complicated.
I take it you have spoken to your VAR?
