Server Busy ! ! !

Ever since I started with Inv - when we had coal power computers - I've got the Server Busy message box. It doesn't appear under any
particular circumstances and sometimes I might go weeks without seeing it - I even get to miss it some times

The point is, I don't run from a server and when I click the Switch to ... button I get the Windoze Start menu pop up in the bottom
left hand corner of my monitor.

Anyway ... it's come back with a vengeance and seems to be appearing more frequently. Has anybody got any suggestions as to how I
can keep Inv mind on the job of producing drawings and models etc and to stop worrying about Micro$oft ?

That message comes up when Inventor is doing COM-based operations.
Often, this is associated with add-ins (e.g., Content Center), but not
always. To get technical, this comes up when a COM operation has taken
longer than 8 seconds (approximately), and the user tries to interact
with Inventor. The dialog comes up to make it clear that something is
indeed happening, and it's not just "hung".

If you see the dialog, you should hit the "Retry" button, and typically
the operation completes normally.

If you note specific scenarios where you're seeing this dialog, please
let us know about it; perhaps we can take steps to reduce the likelihood
of its occurrence.

Thanks!

Jeff,

If your technical explanation is 100% correct then I've got a problem.

Do the COM based operation have to be Inv based ? Can they be other COM based operations ?

The reason I ask is because your scenario doesn't quite fit.

I usually get it midway through an operation - such as opening a file. Using Open as an example, I'll get the Open file dialogue
box, I can then select a file and the Server busy message appears. But there's no consistency. It usually happens when
Inv is interacting witht the outside world, such as open a file, saving a file or opening a file from Vault etc.

Could you give a brief definition of COM - I know it's a computer term - to somebody who knows diddly squat about these sorts of
things.

I assume from Larry's posting this isn't a regular occurrence with other Inv users. Any help in sorting this would be appreciated.

TIA

I don't know exactly why that could happen in that scenario, though it's
likely that something is happening behind the scenes that is
COM-related. Perhaps others can comment on that specific scenario.

COM stands for Component Object Model, a technology developed by
Microsoft several years ago that supports inter-process, and even
inter-computer interaction. If you're interested at all in the "nitty
gritty", msdn.microsoft.com is an excellent resource.

I've just got 'god' rights back - same as god-IT wizard or GIT-Wizard

Ran NSW2003 One Button Check - have a guess how many COM related faults were found in the O/S. Fixed them all and Inv runs a lot
smoother.

So far, no Server Busy messages (^__^)
