Self Intersecting Sweep Using Guide Rail

Hi, I am attempting to create a swept profile along a closed 3D spline using the Path & Guide Rail option.  However, I get the "Self Intersecting" error when doing so.  If the spline is kept open then this is not an issue, (even when the splines are not fully constrained).  I attach a part file which shows the two options, with the closed splines visible and the open splines hidden.  Help appreaciated.

You pretty much have answered your own question. Look at surfaces as a possible solution. The "Surf's Up" article in "The Creative Inventor Magazine" Jan/Feb 2011 issue contains a lot of tips on sweeps/lots as surfaces that should help. Link for the free magazine is shown below:
