Selection Set standard behaviour

In an assembly, you want to select several components, for whatever reason. Maybe you want to demote.

So you hold CTRL down, and left-click on 4 or 5 bits and pieces. Then you mis-click, and select empty space. Now ask yourself: What should happen with that missed click?

The behaviour i see is that instead of *nothing* happening, all of a sudden my selection set is cleared. I'm using IV2010. What happens (just to satisfy my curiosity) in 2011?

Again, really, is this behaviour sensible? Do the same in Windows Explorer. Hold CTRL, and choose several files, and then (without releasing CTRL) click in empty space. Is your selection set cleared? Nu-uh.

Has anyone else got anything to add?
