section view in an idw.....

section view in an idw.....

I'd like to show a full section thru a cylinder. The parent view is looking
at the cylinder from the top. I want a cutting line staring at 12oclock
going to the center of the cylinder and making a right angle to capture
details at the 3 oclock position. It keeps giving me a "half" section. I'd
like to over ride this, is it possible?

If you want a section just use a straight section line through the part.
From your description, it seems like you are defining exactly what you get.

Allow me to clarify... I can make a full section thru a part with a
straight section line, true. I can also make a full section thru a part if
i start my section line at 12 oclock, stop at the center and from the center
go in any angle greater than 90 deg from the initial segment. in other
words, a 120 degree segmented section line will give me a full section but a
90 degree segmented line will not. I'd simply like to overtide the
automatic half section it gives me.

Have you tried dimensioning the angle of the cutting plane line in the
sketch to something like 91°?

I just did some experimenting, and if you don't create the cutting plane
line at a right angle you can achieve what you are trying to do. After
creating the section, edit the sketch that is created for the cutting plane
line and put in an angular dimension. As long as the angle is greater than
90° you will get full section. You can then delete the dimension. At
exactly 90° IV defaults to a half section, which it should.

I'm trying to think why you would want to do that? You would have the
section line indicating a half section view but no half section view for the
machinist to look at. (Hey ... where in the heck did he put that half
section view? Am I missing a sheet?).

Don't remember ever seeing it done that way, but are you saying that if you
draw the section line through both features (90° apart) that they don't both
show in the half section?

No, no, no. Now you're messing with how people will read and interpret the
drawing. The ANSI/ASTM standards define how drawings and drawing views are
created and interpreted. Oddball views and conventions will only lead to
costly mistakes and lots of finger pointing to place blame.

Concur Hal ... think that's the reason they went to all the trouble to
create those standards in the first place ... well ... less you want to
consider having the gun barrels fit the turrets consistently.
