Save IPT or IAM as DWG?

Is it possible to save an assy .iam as a .dwg file?
I saw most of the posts were dealing with the save from idw to dwg but
nothing on the parts or assy.
I didnt see that as an option in the drop down.
I need to insert a 2D of 3D model from IV into Acad/MDT.

Thanks

Hi Jay,

That's true.We can't save the Inventor iam or ipt to MDT assembly or part
files. Did you hear about Autodesk Inventor Companion for the MDT. Following
is information about it. I am not sure this will help you or not.
"The Autodesk Inventor link enables you to link Autodesk Inventor assembly
(.iam) and part (.ipt) documents to AutoCAD Mechanical or Mechanical Desktop
(dwg) files. Once linked, the 3D model is displayed in model space. In paper
space, you can generate drawing views and annotate them.

The link between the dwg file and the part file or assemblhy file is fully
associative. Whenever the part file or assembly file is modified (in
Autodesk Inventor), the changed file is highlighted in AutoCAD
Mechanical/Mechanical Desktop. If required, you can bring in the
modifcations by right-clicking the highlighted file on the browser and
choosing update.

You are not allowed to modify the part file or assembly file from AutoCAD
Mechanical or Mechanical Desktop."

Thanks.

Make an idw of the ipt or iam. Save it as a dwg then extract the 2d info you
want.

Lisa,
I had not heard about the IV companion.
The last thing I need as a link to tie the two together.
Plus, I dont need a 3D model in a 2D environment.
Thank you.

Chris,
I tried saving it as a .sat file but I get a 3D model also.
The dwg I am inserting into are vendor dwg and they do not use paperspace so
I get a 3D model in a 2D line drawing and it looks , well crappy to say the
least.

Thanks.

Jay:

Parts and assemblies, ipt and iam files, are 3d models. You can't
directly create a 2d view of these in ACAD any more than you directly
create 2d views of a 3d ACAD model.

Howard gave one solution wherein you create the 2d views in IV and save
that as a dwg file.

The other solutions, using Mechanical DX as Lisa suggested or using SAT
files as Chris suggested require the translation from 3d to 2d in ACAD.
If memory serves, the SOLVIEW command would be your tool.

Either way, it looks like a lot of steps to go through. May we inquire
as to why you don't just stick with the idw environment?

Thanks Howard,
I think that is my best shot.
A little clean up and I can insert it into the 2d dwg.
Again, thanks

The reason:
2D vendor piping drawins that were done in microstation.
The dwgs are being rev'd in ACAD/MDT.

I see you suffer the same resolve I do. I just can't seem to escape the whole Autocad thing either. You want to work in Inventor and yet the second you export you lose all associativity.

we have shifted to using AutoCAD .dwg as essentially a fancy .pdf (that's editable). Once the designs are finished with a .idw drawing, we "save as" to a .dwg for lasting record of what we did for a specific job. The good thing is about that is that it is not associative and we can update/improve the design for the next job in Inventor. Also, with a .dwg its easy to "fudge" any details or modifications made on the shop floor during production, so the ACAD drawings match what was actually done (i.e. not just showing the 'perfect' inventor model)

Yea,
Life sucks in the ACAD world once you have moved over to Inventor.
