Save INV 2008 file as INV 11 file

I can not fine a way to save a 2008 file back as an 11 file so that i can use files created in the later release. Does anyone know a method? They couldn't really have made these two releases so incompatible could they?

Hi!

There is no way, to save a File from Inventor 2008 back to Inventor 11.
You can only use Step oder ACIS but then you loose the Modelhistory.

Pretty much standard behaviour for all CAD and modelling software not to be
backward compatible, for whatever reason.
You can only save them as dumb solids, which will cause loss of all feature
history and metadata, also loss of constraints in an assembly.
Using the feature generator enabler available from autodesk labs (for R11),
you can regain some feature control if you are prepared to spend some time
on each part.

In all of the AutoCAD and Mech. Desktop editions it is possible to save back, it is also possible to save back in .sat form (for ppl with really old editions). Which is logical since it contains all of the new technology and all of the old.
The problem now is there is no point fully updating to 2008 until all of our clients update, otherwise we will only be able to send the .sat and .step forms. We share data, that may have to be modified after it is transmitted and are not able to do so in those forms. I don't see why Autodesk would not make this available in Inventor when they have in all their other modelling software, particularly their flagship edition. This holds our productivity up until they update.

Cheers for the replies anyway guys.

Can anyone name a 3D modeler that can 'save as' in an older format of the same app ?? Inventor is by no means alone in this.

Think about it using some examples:

IV11 introduced a centerline rail option for the loft command. How would IV10 or IV9 or earlier deal with that ? It has NO CLUE what that feature is because it didn't exist in their loft commands.

What about a surface-to-surface fillet ? How could older versions understand what's going on ?

Do something "fancy" in MS Word 2007 or 2003 and then do a "Save As" to an older *.DOC format. Word will warn you that you will lose some features if you do this.

You have never been able to save back in Mechanical Desktop either...
