Revisions to ipt files

Hi all,

I need help on revised drawings.

The company I am working for wants to save part files and assembly files
that get revised with a new name.

For example:

SCRT01.iam and SCRT01.idw become SCRT01-A.iam and SCRT01-A.idw for Revision
A

Does this mean that I have to recreate the SCRT01-A.idw from scratch?

Thanks,
Jim Gralinski

James,

The way were working here is when a drawing is released, all associated
files are written to CD and stored with the stamped drawing(s). We also
save a rev "X" drawing on the server with updates deferred. We leave the
part and assembly files as is and make updates to those.

If you have to save all the files, DA is your best bet.

Either way, you don't have to recreate your drawing from scatch.

Use Design Assistant to rename the files and udpate the external references.

Do save as (with new name) of IPT and IAM files.
Open new IAM file, in the browser click on the old IPT file,
RMB and select replace Components, replace with new IPT file,
perform your revision to the new IPT file.

That is my thought.

Thanks for the responses.

I understand about taking an assy file (.iam) and doing a file saveas to a
new one, calling the new one up on the screen, opening the part to be
revised, doing a file saveas on that and doing a replace component.

My problem is in the idw file.

I have a frame for a large conveyor that will be the same for another
project except that one structural member (frame leg) will be longer for one
project vs another.

I have about (7) drawing sheets in the same (idw) for the conveyor frame.

Do I have to create a whole new drawing, and add all the same dimensions,
notes etc to get documentation for the different frame?

thanks

Jim

If you open the copied IDW in Design Assistant, you should be able to
use DA to create copies of the parts you want different. After doing
this, open the IDW and validate that it is connected to the copied part
/ assembly files then it should be safe to edit the parts to the new sizes.

Check idw in bottom half of DA. Control click copied parts in DA. Click find file in bottom half of DA. Go get a Dite Coke or read mail. Now copy and rename idw of copied parts. This way you can reuse the idw of all copied idw and iam.
