Replacing .ipt in the .idw

Lets say I have a small design finished and fully detailed. Now they come back and say that we need another one of those designs, only slightly different. Now the two of them are in the same shop-order so therefore stored in the same folder and created using the same project folder. Now, is there any way, to re-use the first .idw of each part, replacing the .ipt it's looking at with the new, re-designed .ipt???? I thought that there might be something in DA, but I'm not seeing it so far. Any help would be appreciated.

If I'm understanding correctly...In da, I'd copy
the assembly and associated idw to new file names, then make the parts
iparts and change the version of the ipart that shows up in you new
assembly.

Open DA in explorer from the IDW you want to
copy.  Click the manage button.  RMB in the action column for the IDW
and select copy.  RMB in the filename and change the name.  Now repeat
for the IPT or IAM unter the drawing.

Whoa! Where did i-parts come from? Maybe my explanation wasn't clear enough. Per the example above, the second assembly (similar to but different from the first) is done. The parts in that assembly have slightly different names (say "widget_B" versus "widget_A".) So now what we are trying to do is find a way to copy the .idws that are already done for the first assembly/design and reuse them by replacing the reference to "widget_A" with a new reference to "widget_B" in the .idw. And hopefully not losing all our dimensions, otherwise I'd just blow away the views and start over...

Why would you make them iParts???

Try this: In Windows explorer, copy the parts and related drawings in the same
folder. You should get a "Copy of Part..." Change those to what you want part
file name to be. Slightly alter the original file name. Open the new copies. You
should get an unresolved dialog. Pick the new file/s. Save. Rename the originals
back to original name.

I was thinking you could use iparts if widget a
& b were similar and you wanted to keep them that way.

I assumed that the parts in the two assemblies could be modeled as a part
families.

I may be saying the same thing that everybody else said, but if you use DA to copy, then rename the copy, you can then modify the new ipt and it will reflect in the idw without having to be redrawn.

I assumed that you would be able to control which
version of the ipart was shown in the idw. Now that I've tried, it apparently
won't work that way. I guess that would be wishlist item then.
