Replace component & maintain constraints

I was trying to replace 1 decal ipt with another. It seems mighty foolish for me to have to reconstrain the decals in place. I heard that you can use DA to do that but I can't seem to get DA to do anything but look at files. I am missing something when it comes to DA. What is it? How dow I replace components and maintain constraints.

I agree in principle about the constraints, but
when you stop and think about it, if the part your are replacing with is a
different part, how does IV know which features of the new part are the
same as the features of the old part you previously had constrained?

If you have a part you are going to do a
savecopyas, modify and replace the original part with, do the savecopyas, then
the replace, then the modifications and you will not lose the constraints
(unless you remove a feature used with the constraints).

I was under the impression that DA could do it... is this correct? same part size different bmp for the decal..

Don't know for sure, never used DA for
replacing.

Try this..

Have a part "A".  Insert this part into
the assy and constrain it using the edges of the part (not the decal).  Now
open this part and "save copy as" to partB but *do not open the new part*.
Now reenter your assy and use the replace command.  It should not loose
constraints.  Now you can change the BMP to which the decal is
referring.

The decals were made in advance. d1 calls bmp1
saveas d1 saveas d2 edit sketch replace decal bmp save d2. Is that basically what you are referring to Sean?

Yes but replace it in the assy *before* you open or
edit the second part.  Opening the part seems to "dirty" the part and make
it such that a replace in an assy causes constraints to go haywire.
