Remove Ordinate dimension

Inventor 2009....does anybody know how to remove an Ordinate dimension (not Ordinate Dimension Set). It seems you can only make one per view. And you can only edit the dimension, i.e. the Origin symbol, but not delete it !??!?!
Don't know if there is a change from previous versions of Inventor to 2009.

Best regards,
Jorn

Right click on the dimension you want to remove, choose "delete member" in the drop down list.

There is no possibility to "Delete member", neither if you right-click a dimension nor the Origin Symbol. Was that possible in previous Inventor releases, or do you have it in Inventor 2009???

Jorn,

You cannot delete the Origin Symbol, but you can hide it. Just select the
Origin Symbol, show the context menu (aka RMB), and choose Hide Origin
Indicator. Or you can select any of the ordinate dimensions and hide the
Origin Symbol.

You should be able to delete any dimension. Is it possible that you have
something else selected in addition to the ordinate dimension? Did you do a
window select, maybe? Having multiple heterogeneous objects selected might
prevent you from seeing the Delete command on the context menu. Otherwise I
cannot think of anything that would prevent you from deleting a dimension.

Hope this helps...

Just curious, what are you trying to achieve be deleting the origin marker? If you need to place it anywhere else in that view all you have to do is click and drag it to the spot you need. But if you are not going to use ordinate style dimensions, just hide it and you should be good.

The actual problem is like this: We have an existing Ordinate Dimension. We want to move one dimension-member (which is possible), but we also want to add a dimension. We can't find a way to add a member, so the solution seemed to be to entirely delete the Origin Symbol along with all the dimensions....and just start a new one. But we can't start a new one, since the Origin Symbol can't be deleted (why not, actually?? Why is it only possible to hide it and have garbage lying around).

But I guess the question is now: How to add a dimension to an existing Ordinate Dimension ??

Thanks for all your help...

So once you place your ordinate dimensions, click done and realize that you need to add another ordinate dimension, it won't allow you to select ordinate dimension, click the same view, and add more dimensions?

In your original post you said that this was not an ordinate dimension set, which makes sense because an ordinate dim set doesn't create the origin indicator. So, there is no set to add to. Simply select the Ordinate Dimension command and create another ordinate dimension. It will not ask for the orign location since that already exists.

My thoughts exactly.

Jorn,

Regarding why you cannot add an ordinate dimension... Is it possible for
you to post your data set? If you cannot post it for proprietary reasons,
would you be able to send it to us, so that we can look at it? From your
description it is sounding like there is something fundamentally different
about your data set that I cannot duplicate. This is the workflow I tried
using Autodesk Inventor 2009:

1. Assume that an ordinate dimension has already been created. The center
datum exists and a few dimension members exists. No command is active.
2. Select the Ordinate Dimension command on the Annotation panel.
3. Select the view.
4. Select model or sketch geometry until all is selected (should be cyan in
color).
5. Show the context menu and select continue.
6. Select the dimension text location.
7. Show the context menu and select done.

I was able to delete dimensions and add different ones. I was even able to
re-add the ones I had deleted.

Regarding why the origin symbol cannot be deleted... I do not really know.
I know it is used by multiple objects (ordinate dimensions, hole tables, and
something else that currently escapes my memory). And I know there is only
one per view. I know it can be moved, so if it is not where you want it,
you can drag it to another location, but that location has be on the same
view. I know it can be attached to a center mark. And that it cannot be
deleted, but it can be hidden. In the big scheme of things it is not very
big, so I would not worry about it. If you do not want to see, just hide
it.

Is there a way to show an ordinate indicator after you have hidden it?

Hi bhahn,

You can right-click on one of the ordinate dimensions and deselect Hide Origin Indicator from the list.

I hope this helps.

You can delete the view and make a new view and re-dimension without using a plain ordinate.

Chain Ordinates don't bring that piece of clumsy code along.

After tripping over these after "Replace Model", I just dumped the view and started from scratch. I re-appears from being "Hidden".

So much for automation. This is cluncky.

I don't think there was any actual problem identified in the previous conversation that needed to be fixed.  What is it that you hoped would happen in the intervening nine years?

Allow users to delete the Datum mark. This is a nuisance during the Replace Model Reference command.

It reappears when the dimensions become dissociated from a part they reference.

I then has to be hidden again.

How exciting. One of my early posts from way back when I was just learning Inventor has sprung back up. I see that I never properly thanked everyone for their help in a problem I no longer really remember. I guess I've gotten used to Inventor's idiosyncrasies at this point!
