Red Highlighted Library Search Paths - What does it all mean???

Hi Guys
I haven't found any documentation (or easily accessible) on this phenomena within Inventor. The question is why are some lines in the Project Library Search paths highlighted in red & others are not.
Thanks in advance

They are nested. Nested paths turn red. Supposedly you can keep them nested
but I can't live with'em like that personally. There's a document on the CD
that is pretty comprehensive about projects and there are a bunch of older
post about it.

What's odd, is that Autodesk says that nested search paths are a bad thing,
but then the samples project uses them! I find it much easier to navigate
through our purchased components library with the nested paths. I haven't
seen any problems with it. What are the supposed problems with this setup?

It forces Inventor to look through the paths again instead of once. This
causes a delay in load time. Inventor will find files in nested folders
without them being listed in the project file if Inventor already knows from
the assembly the files are there. To make Inventor look there when it knows
it does not have to is redundent and time wasting.

Besides that it will work and you won't have any problem with it that way.

The nested path short cuts in the open dialog are great for single click
access through the folders.

I have always argued that nested paths *should* not be a bad thing

A while back I tried a test on a decent size assy.

I tried it once with nested paths and once with non nested paths.

The nested path project took about 5 seconds longer (out of about 1.5 min)
to load the assy.

I can live with that amount of delay to have the shortcuts in the left-hand
pane.

Yeah ... guess I could get used to the red paths, but I didn't have to I
guess; my projects still open up to the files dialog so it seems okay to me.

Gone to figure!

I miss having the short-cuts in the left-hand pane, but it's only one click
on the "up to next level" icon to get there. Guess I got used to that
instead. Would be nice if they could get it so the projects could still be
shown in the left-pane even without nested paths or whatever it took to make
it seem like the ... good-ol'-days ... well ... the old days, anyway.

Sean,

Thanks for the valuable info. That makes me feel better about leaving them
the way they are. I agree with Larry that it "Would be nice if they could
get it so the projects could still be shown in the left-pane even without
nested paths..."

We have nested paths and it's a killer when doing searches for tools like
Pack and Go and Where Used.

As an example I did a simple Pack and Go search for related files on a
medium sized project and had the following results.

With Nested Folders: 59 seconds
Without Nested Folders: 32 seconds

This doesn't sound like much of a difference, but on some of our projects it
can take forever.
