Recognizing AutoCAD 3D Solids (SolidWorks)

Is there an add-on or something that will recognize 3D data, say a STEP file or a 3D AutoCAD file, and build the data in Inventor? This would be similar to "Feature Works" in SolidWorks.
Thanks

There is Feature Exchange for MDT on the

second CD of AIS 6
as a trial version.

If you have MDT on your machine, you

can add the features to the model with

Feature Exchange and then import

the result to Inventor. Does only good

work with simple models.

I don't know whether this gives any
sense.

dpiengineering,

No, there is no "add on" as this is 'built in" as is.

Cheers.

It is built in??? I know Inventor will recognize MDT models to some extent,
but it will not do STEP or a 3D AutoCAD file like the question asked.

Sure it will. You can import both STEP and AutoCAD solids. Click open and
select the file type to import. Click on options before you open to set the
options specific to each file type.

It will open the models, but will it recognize the features of a STEP model.

Sorry misunderstood the question. You are correct. Feature based
translation is the holy grail in CAD translations...

You can look into some of the 3rd party services like elysium. I think they translate the native files from 1 system to another, not a neutral file like STEP.

They still don't go natively to Inventor
however.  Supposedly in Q2 2003....

As an aside, did you know you can copy and paste an
AutoCAD sketch into SW.  Why can't we do this in IV???

Anyone checked out TTI, Proficiency, Aspire3D or any of the others? There was also some companies that used to take clean 2D drawings and convert them to MDT. Anyone have any experiece with that type of translation?

yes, yep, un-hunh and a few others (Theorem, TIF,
Translation Technologies etc..)

We were researching ProE to IV native feature based
transfer.  So far no one that I have found has a feature based translator
that will go directly into IV.  As mentioned before you can use the Feature
exchanger but sometimes that can be a long process.

I think Elysium is the closest to having a product
to market, but it will be a few more months...(Proficiency was supposedly
working on one too but I haven't heard anything on it lately)
