Reason 159 we need a cancel button

Was promoting a complex surface today. IV did not lock up but I after 10
solid mins it was apparent I still had 10 more mins to go. So I figured I'd
let it crunch on it while I ran some errands later today. So I got to push
the cancel buttons....

Oh that's right. We STILL don't have a cancel button!!!

Shift-Ctrl-Esc, kill process... 😞

Sean,

Yes, this is a long-asking wish to have a way to abort an operation without
killing the process. I will forward your request to development for review.
Regarding the complex surface, is there a way you can send the dataset to
us? Are you promoting one by one? Did you try promoting as Composite
Surface?
Many thanks!

Not really, customer is VERY protective. Yes I promoted as a composite.
This part probably had 10,000+ surfaces.

Even where there are Cancel buttons they don't respond in a timely manner.

Sarcastic Mode On

"Yes, this is a long-asking wish to have a way to abort an operation without killing the process."

So why don't we have it? 😉

"I will forward your request to development for review."

According to Sean, you should have logged this issue 158 times now... 😛

I agree, we really need a cancel button. But I think the issue is broader than that. There ought to be a mechanism to avoid the model rebuild that is forced on the user. At least half the time I'm editing part features I have more than one change to make. DON'T recalc the part until I hit the lighting bolt icon- at least make the behavior toggle by some means. What a waste of time waiting for the entire part to regen and then do it again on the next feature change.

Also, there is the problem of waiting for the rebuild to finish only to find out the change I made caused that feature to fail- ARGH! Why can't Inventor tell me this right away? Add a cancel/continue msgbox for this situation

Hi cranston,

If you "roll up" the End of Part marker to just below the feature you're
editing, it will delay the updates of dependent features that are below the
EoP marker. We have a defer updates mechanism for Assemblies (see
assemblies application options tab) but not for parts that I'm aware of.

I have logged wish list item 815278 "NG Customer Wish: To have defer
updates for part features" to address this.

I hope this helped...

Thanks,

Maybe I should have wrote, "Even where there are Cancel buttons they don't respond at all in certain situations." I can find no indication that Cancel actually cancels this operation. It should be grayed out once no longer available in the command.

I agree with Sean. I am not an expert programmer, however I know LabVIEW allows the programmer to add "Application Exit" event which is far better than "Abort Execution".

To the point, I wonder -- how easy is to add a "cancel" button?
