We are using Inventor 2012 and would like to read Solidworks 2012 files directly into the system. This can be done with Solidworks 2011 files but our vendor upgraded his software between the time he sent us test files to try the import and now. Can you tell me if the is a plug in or something that will allow us to read SW 2012 files or should we upgrade to Inventor 2013?
SolidWorks 2012 was released after Inventor 2012. You will need a later version of Inventor, perhaps free Inventor Fusion 2013.
If I'm not mistaken, if you have the latest Service Pack loaded for Inventor 2012, that should allow you to open SW 2012 files.
I'm pretty sure that's what I've seen in the past.
The latest service package for Inventor 2012 is SP2 and it is not supported to open Solidworks 2012 files .
Inventor 2013 does supports to read Solidworks 2012 files.

We loaded 2013 on a test machine and it works.
Now we have to schedule our upgrade to 2013. A little sooner than I would like though.
Thanks for all your help

If you're not ready to move to Inventor 2013, just use it to open the Solidworks files, then save them to STEP format for use in 2012. They are dumb solds coming into 2013, so you won't lose anything by STEPing them into 2012.
