re-install IV5, service pack problem

i got a new computer here at work (not new, refurbished from what we had
inhouse). dual 750s, only 512 on the memory since we couldn't find any more
matching sticks, win2k

installed IV5. clicked on the network version when i did the install since
that is where the license is. inventor starts up no problem. reboot for
the pure fun of it. try to install SP1 non-locked english version, same one
that i had installed on my old computer, and i get "Internal Error 2711.
Gold"

i'd just get my IT guy to fix it while i take a long lunch, but we layed him
off. so i'm on my own here. any help would be much appreciated.
