"Use color override from source component" reverts to default intermittently

I regulary (almost exclusively) model complex designs with a multi-bodied source ipt file. Then, I use the "make components" commant to create an assembly of all the bodies. Universally, I want to control material, appearance, part no, etc, etc. from the BOM in the assembly. Unfortunately, for the last few years, there has been a bug wich takes the "use color override from source component" check box and reverts it back to it's default setting which is checked. This happens intermittantly and if gone unnoticed, requires that each individual ipt file in an assembly be opened, edit derive part, and uncheck the box. I never have a reason to check this box. I universally prefer that it be unchecked. Unfortunately there is way to make a global change to this setting. In addition, a derived part can revert back to the "checked" state upon a rebuild.

Is there any way to avoid this?

Thanks in advance

Hi! There is a registry switch to set the option off by default.

Close Inventor and find the following registry key.

Go to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\Inventor\RegistryVersion1x.0\System\Preferences\PartDerivedPartDlg\"

Add a key “InitialColorOverride” and set its value to 0.

Thanks!

Johnson,

thanks. I'll give it a try. If I go a week with no troubles I'll accept as solved.

Johnson,

I created the registry key as you suggested. No change in behavior. Derived parts ar still reverting back to checked status.

Hi! What release of Inventor are you on? R2014 or R2015?

I'm in 2014. I'll be moving to 2015 any day. Is this corrected in 2015?

Hi! It should work. It works on my machine. Have you installed R2014 SP2? Could you take a snapshot of the registry I showed you? I want to see how you set up on your machine.

Thanks!

Hi! I see where the problem is. I am sorry it was my fault giving the wrong instruction. "InitialColorOverride" is not a key. It should be a DWORD and set the value to 0.

Please let me know if it works.

Thanks!

I'm having the same problem in INV 2016

Inv Pro 2016 64 bit

Build 236, Release 2016 SP2 - Date Thu 04/21/16

Can you give me instructions for this version?

I expect to be posting again after I upgrade to 2017 in  the near future.

Thanks

It's ticking itself for me in the Application Ooptions still in 2017! Tried the registry fix, which didn't seem to help. Any update on this would be welcome...

Andrew,

2018 has a setting in Application Options.

I have found that it is now reliable once you un-check the box.
