I am outright confused over this entire Material and Appearance library fiasco. I don't know what's going on or how to fix it but every time I open a template I get and error message saying, "The following style definitions C:\my pathway differ from the definitions in the style library..." Then it lists things like Color: Aluminum - Flat, Color: Blue - Wall Paint - Glossy, etc etc.
I cannot seem to fix this or get it to go away, it's driving me insane and it does it with any and all of my templates. What do I do to fix this?
Open your template, purge materials and appearances that aren't used, then update from the library. Save.
That is, use the Purge Styles tool to get rid of unneeded M&A from the file, then make sure that the ones left in the file match your libraries.

I think you've taken care of it. Now when you use this template to create a new part, there shouldn't be any mismatch.
Sounds as if your template had a bunch of materials and appearances that were not being used, and that didn't match the library. So, you got rid of the unused ones, and whatever is left matches the library, so you should be ready to use it without the annoying message.

Are you using the same M&A libraries when you edit the template? If so, I have no idea how this could happen.

Check in projects and make sure your style library is set to read-write.
OK, I just noticed your signature. Disregard most of what I've written about Materials & Appearances, because that's all new in 2013.
In 2012 (and earlier versions), the Materials and Colors are part of the Styles Library. The SL is what the Design Data file path points to. So, in your .ipj file, under Folder Options, what is Design Data set to?

Are you using the same project (.ipj) when you edit your template and when you start a new file? If so, can you post a screen shot of that project open in the Project Editor, with both the Appearance Libraries and Material Libraries expanded?

I have the same problem in 2012. I have purged and updated and saved to the styles library many times, and no matter what I do, this message continues to appear whenever I use one of my templates. I can't make it go away. Many of our users have this issue.
This only started happening about 6 months ago or so. Maybe related to an update? I don't know.

Is this what you were asking for?
Yes, that's what I was asking for. Do you use that project for editing templates and for your regular work?

Right, but I'm trying to find out if you are using the same M & A libraries when you are editing the templates as you are when you start a new part and get this

It appears that there was a subfolder with copies of the templates I was using and I was opening them by mistake. The templates I'm actually using open up fine. The problem has been solved... er well, it's been solved for a while now, I just did not notice because I was opening the wrong templates.
