Quadro FX worth it?

Quadro FX worth it?

I am buying a new workstation, and an option is to upgrade from a Quadro 750
or 900 to a Quadro FX for around $450. My assemblies rarely go over 200
parts, but my main goal is fast IDW performance. What real gains will the
Quadro FX give me over a 750 or 900? Is it worth downgrading my RAM (from
2GB) or processor (dual to single) to afford the FX? I was leaning towards
a dual processor to so I can run Office apps simultaneously with Inventor,
and to speed drawing updates.
Another question: what are the chances of the Quadro FX not getting along
with Inventor? It is not on the Autodesk certified drivers list yet (or is
it?)

Thanks,
Brad

I have a 900 and I really never seen it bogging down. If anything it's my
1.5GB or RAM that gives out first in very large assys. Fro 200 part assys I
don't think I'd spend the money on the new card. I'd upgrade the RAM or buy
a bigger monitor

I completely agree, since getting my 900 XGL my
only wish is an 8Ghz processor 😉

IMO I don't think 200 part assemblies justifies the additional cost of the FX card.

in a best buy ad this past weekend, i saw a pre-sale ad for an nvidia fx for $399 - unless this wasn't a quadro card, it seems like an upgrade from a 700-900 and then add $450, seems a little steep. i agree with sean go with the 700-900 for price. -Joe

I'm just geussing here, as I have never touched an FX nor read a true IV
test with it...
The only big disadvantage of all the Quadro cards so far seems to be that
they don't support hardware acceleration of lines/arcs in OpenGL, and that's
the reason why idw's are so very much slower in graphic compared to ACAD/MDT
(where a special display list is used for maximum grafic speed in 2d mode).
I've heard something that the FX cards will support hardware acceleration of
2d entities in OpenGL, so I'm guessing that this might solve those idw
performance problems.

I would imagine that it will work perfectly with the correct drivers. The
Quadro4 980 is based on the "same" NV30 family of chips, and that is fantastic
with IV.

What about 980 GXL 8X AGP? It is only around 50 dollars more than the 900
GXL... It is good idea to have a motherboard for your new workstation that
will handle 8X AGP so maybe later you can always upgrade to Quadro FX...
Anyone agree with me?

I would tend to agree with the other comments. My new system is similar to
what you described. Yesterday I had to go back to my old machine for some
info, didn't think it was ever going to finish. If you run several apps at
the same time, the dual processor helps, particularly when you set the
affinity to limit certain programs to a certain processor. Our assemblies
are about 200-300 parts, idws are definitely faster.

Yes, having an AGP 8X MB would be handy to run an 8X AGP card efficiently. 😉

I agree that if the 980 is only $50 more than the 900 I'd say go for the 980. See my post yesterday that offers a link to a review of 8X AGP card including the 980.

Say, I've got a 900 also and it bogs down fairly often working with drawings. I've got a Xeon, 1GB or ram and just dloaded the 40.72 driver from nVidia. Is there something I need to activate inside Inventor to exploit the new driver setting?

The only solution I have found it to not do drawings 🙂
