quadro 4 vs geforce 4

What differences would be noticed?

GF Card would go into go slow mode if you have too many windows open, particularly if they have
active sketches with the grid displayed and slice view is enabled on a component with Black Chrome
texture applied. When I say go slow I mean 10second delay between mouse clicks that will only go
away by shutting down IV and restarting.

There are other OpenGL settings that you can tweak with a Quadro card to make it really fly along,
and a 550 is about the same price as a top spec GF4 Ti card, and Inventor much prefers the Quadro.

What chip is the 550 based on? And how many windows is too many?

It is the NV25 Quadro 4 (I think) but I can't get rid of the heatsink and fan! It is essentially an
Elsa Gloria 3 but with a faster clock speed. The Quadro 4 750's and 900's are based on the same
chip but with 128MB RAM and some enhanced features for lighting and transparency and even faster
clock speeds.

With sufficient tweaking the Quadro 4 550 will handle a 10000 part assembly more than adequately,
but for real performance one of the more expensive cards is required.

Max number of windows with a GF depends on what is open in each window. A guideline is 5 windows,
but it can be killed with just 3 windows open (slice graphics, reflections and textures etc) and
after a lot of opening and closing files it will gradually slow down. This is more an
Inventor/Windows issue, but appears worse with the GF cards.

We are using GeForce 4 Ti4600 cards with 128 meg ram. For part modelling i can usually get a minimum of 10 windows open before I get noticable slowdown from the card. For assembly modelling I haven't had much slowdown at all. For some assemblies, say around 500 components (mostly arrays) during a rotation some of the instances of the parts will momentarily dissappear, but as soon as you stop rotation, they appear straight away again.

So, what is the performance difference for IDWs
with the Quadro and GeForce cards?

I'm curious since I may need to decide between
the two.

I would use the Quatro 4-900 thats what I use and I have very large assembly (Plants with working equipment). I used elsa syenergy 2 which is on a P3500 NT machine. We did a test at work using a sample model from the IV disc.
With the shadows turned on and the grid and 2 color background the model stumbled during oribt. Then I brought in my plant assembly on my workstation turned on the same background and shadows. there wasn't any change during orbit. Spend the money on the card.
