Pushing a derived part

using Inventor 2014

Is it possible to take a part and to push some of the feature tree out to a part that the original part is derived from?

I have a complicated part which is inserted into an assembly and has drawings.   An example would be a finished cast crankcase.  Could I push out the reatures which make up the raw casting, and make the crankcase derived from the newly pushed part?

Thanks

Bob

I am not sure from your description what you are asking, but two techniques

1. Model finished machined part casting.

Derived Component the finished part.

Delete Face with Heal Option to remove holes.

Thicken to add material back to machined faces.

Add the casting fillets.

Now you have the machined part and the derived cast part.

Option 2

Model the casting as cast.

Derive Component the casting into a new part and add the finished machined features.

This is more like the real world, but we often know the finished feature dimensions before we know the casting.

Thanks for the reply, but I guess I need to explain myself better.

I have a complicated part that is inserted into an assembly and has drawings made of it.  This was made as a simple part, not derived.  I would like it to be a derived part.  For example:  Make a new part that is the first 20 features in the feature browser, and then have my main part dervied from it.  If it was the casting example, and the first 20 features make up the casting.  Can I export them out of my finished crankcase, and have my crankcase a derived part, based on the casting part.

Roll up the EOP to just below the first 20 features.

Derive Component and Suppress (or Break) Link.

But you would lose associativity.

I don't understand the second part of the problem described above.

Might just be easier to start over.

Sorry for the cunfusion.

I have a part with 30 features.  I want it to be a derived part, with the first 20 features making up the base part.  Can I do that without starting over?

Roll up the EOP to feature 20.

Right click on the EOP and select Delete all features below EOP.

Derive the part.

Add the remaining 10 features to the derived part.
