Projecting Geometry

Sometimes I want to project geometry from one sketch to another. This becomes a problem when I cannot get the sketch I want to project off of into view while editing another sketch. In the browser I have both sketches with visability checked on.

When I go to edit one sketch sometimes everything else dissapears from view, sometimes other sketches stay in view. What's causing this? Is it the order of creation (one sketch is dependant off another - so both are shown), or is it that no projection, association is possible with other sketches (so only the current sketch is shown)?
