projected silhouette edges and feature reorder (IV6)

projected silhouette edges and feature reorder (IV6)

File in CF.

_ Sketch2 was created immediately after Extrusion1 and the cylinder
silhouette edges projected to sketch plane.
_ EOP was then pulled above Sketch2 and the fillet added.

Same thing happens if the fillet is created and then pulled above Sketch2.
I'd think that the projected edges should shorten to match the shortened
cylindrical face (???). Anyone have an idea whether this is 'as designed' or
an update problem?

Jeff,

Sorta same note can you project the silhouette edges from another part in an
assembly. I seem to remember doing this in 5.3 ok but cant get it to work in
6?

Hi, Brian.

I don't often use cross part projections, but it seems to work except for
silhouette edges not updating. I also can't project silhouettes from splined
shapes (a revolved spline; flower vase, etc.). Projections of planar faces
and individual face edges (an improvement over 5.3) seems to work well.

I'm putting another file set in CF; a simple assembly (cylinder and a "slave"
to accept the projection) and a file that has a strange "project loop".
Neither is a big problem for me, just a matter of curiosity.

I saw your post on projected edges, but haven't a clue what might be the
problem. If it's a simple face projection of a simple native part, I'd
suspect a bad installation (??) or, possibly, a graphics related thing. If
you can post an example perhaps it would help.

HI Jeff, From what I have seen best I remember, reference lines that come
out black are set in stone from the time you make them. I have no reason to
think they would behave differently from the way they do. OK granted the
fillet is in front of sk2 but these are ref lines aren't they!?
So you change the length of extrusion1 and the ref lines shorten? That's my
theory out the window, that's what they call talking yourself into it. Also
if you project silhouette lines after fillet then edit, suppress or delete
the fillet, the lines do up date, like you say just a curiosity. I am not
sure what the assembly is showing?

Hi, Laurence.

The assembly was just done because I couldn't remember what the cross part
behavior was (and prompted by Brian's post). In it, the projected silhouettes
appear to be grounded. Nothing changes if the cylinder changes which I'd
expect as there isn't an associated "Reference". Why they are black instead
of magenta / pink is a mystery, but so much has changed with projections, I
probably just haven't learned all the in's and out's of what's supposed to be.

I hadn't tried supressing or deleting a fillet after projection, so thanks for
that bit of info. So, for now I know not to trust projected silhouettes and
all is well.

Your right Jeff, with CPGP on projected lines are black, not so in 5.3.
I am not sure that this is now more confusing or not. I recon this is a
glitch? Silhouette projected lines........jury still out on that :^\

This behavior is due to the way we track things like faces and edges.
In the case of a silhouette edge of a face, effectively it tends to reflect
the
ordering of the features that affect the face, at the time silhouette edge
was
created. It's just an unintended consequence of our general tracking
approach
that works quite well for most other applications. If this is a serious
enough
problem we could investigate a different approach to track faces for
silhouette
edges.

BTW, these silhouette edges are associative, in that if the geometry changes
the sketch line also changes. The black color implies that the geometry is
of
"reference" type. Reference sketch curves are driven by things external to
the
sketch. Derived sketches also contain a form of reference sketch curves.

Thanks, Udaya.

I don't consider it to be a problem, once I know what to expect (have to stash
this thread, so I can go back and reference it when I forget ).

I think that the other issue (cross part silhouettes being projected as black
entities) is likely to cause a bit more confusion for the average user as it's
contrary to the expected {adaptive = black, static = magenta} norm. Again,
once the behavior is known; no problem, but cross part projections seem to be
a source of confusion for a lot of us. 8~)
