Project flat pattern anomaly

I just noticed something while projecting a flat pattern in a sketch.

When you don't project the full flat pattern, IV indicates that there are a lot of dimensions needed.

But when you project the entire flat, it changes back to "fully constrained".

It does this in both IV 2014 and 2015, i made a quick video in 2015:

(view full screen to read the lower right corner's text, if needed.)

Unable to display content. Adobe Flash is required.

Does anyone else see this? (maybe even in earlier versions?)

I just tried here and couldn't reproduct the behavior you demonstrate.

Thanks JD.

Just to make sure it's not in my templates, i'll add my testparts for both IV versions.

Would you mind trying those?

I'm seeing the same as you, Niels, in 2015

Hi! I have seen this behavior before. Actually, it has been there for a while. The key to reproduce the behavior has something to do with Corner Relief option. When the Flat Pattern Project creates approximated line segments around the corner, somehow Inventor believes those line segments are free to constrain. This behavior is mostly seen if CR is set to Linear Weld or Round. The behavior is not right though. This is a bug.

Thanks!

Hi Johnson, thanks for this information.

I quickly tried with my 2014 testpart and had the following results:

"Tear" and "Round" will give the behavior i described, turning fully constrained when the entire flatpattern is projected.

"Linear weld" will not turn fully constrained at any point.

"Trim to bend" and "Arc weld" function properly and will remain fully constrained at every projection.

"Square" will give the following error after the first projection:

Square_error.png

Which i can accept and it still gives the expected projection, but it keeps popping up for every other side i want to project.

If this is a known bug, can you tell me if there is any progress on a fix?

This is not a real show stopper, but it is rather annoying when you try to keep your sketches fully constrained.

Hi! I am not sure if it is fixable or how long it will take to fix it. If it was straight forward, it should have been taken care of by now. Have you try Unfold/Refold workflow? Is it not working for you so you have to use Project Flat Pattern workflow?

Thanks!

The Unfold/Refold workflow works when it's needed.
But that adds 2 features to the browser tree, which often is not needed for the simple things that need to be done.
We use "Tear" as standard corner, so we will just project the entire flat pattern when we come across this problem for now.

So, thank you and Daniela from customer support for confirming this is a (known) bug.
We will work around it until it is fixed.
