Progress indicator

What is the deal with 5 minute long hourglass waits??? Am I crashed or is it
still thinking?? Task Manager says Not Responding. Back from a cup of coffee
we're live again. Hey isn't there some rule of thumb that if a process takes
longer than a minute it's good programming to throw a progress indicator on
screen, i.e. MTD Hiding lines 50% done?? Or a bar filling up, etc.
Is this in the works or will it always be a throw of the dice whether or not
to hit the reset switch?

good idea. i second the notion to add a progress meter when the program is
working. maybe something that could be turned on and off, depending on the
user.

Or if a meter is hard to program (hard to estimate time left), at least a small animation or something that tells us that it has not crashed yet.

Yea, like a small clock that just show's how long it's taking like one of the old version of Pro/E used to have.

Count me in as well.

How many times have I killed a process? Let me count the ways.

For any software to display, use or refer to the Windows Logo it must meet a rigid and clearly defined set of criteria.

MS Windows Logo requirements

I can't be sure how this issue is addressed in the requirements. But the last time I checked, there is no logo on the IV Box.

Let's just hope it's not on Microsoft time where after it says 100% complete it takes another 72 hours to finish

Lets not forget a reliable break button for the
case that it really would take hours...

I agree with all that's been said. It's tough to work without knowing if you're really working or not. I also like Leo's chime for a "stop" button when performing most tasks (opening files, regen idw views, feature calculation, etc...)

I don't think my Flintstone BC has enough processing power to run the progress indicator. Lets go with the suggestion to allow turning it off!

I would love to see a some indication that things
are moving along so I can take my finger off the reset trigger. Somewhere, I
heard this adds significant resource requirement to do in MDT but don't know
about IV.

If so, it's probably worth the trade off to
recoup lost time of having to reboot & do it again...& again...if not
really necessary. The stop button idea would
very welcome.

My $.02 (about what I make an hour
after rebooting a bunch <G>).

Strange...

Back at the IV release 1 time, some Adesk developer
did a poll in the NG about this topic, and all the answers he got were the same
we have in this thread right now....

How do I get confirmation that this is being addressed, since it sounds like
the users' opinions were solicited on this issue 3 years ago (R1 according
to Leo). Anyone ever gotten feedback as to yes or no this is in the works??

We don't get any confirmation until Autodesk decides to publish what will come in the next release/service pack. All we can do is make suggestions, pleas, do some griping and complaining, and sometimes beg. It's up to Autodesk to prioritize the incredibly long IV wish list. I'm sure each user would prioritize that list differently depending on each user's unique needs. See Sean's weekly FAQ post for the link to where you can officially send Autodesk your input about IV.
