I am using Inventor 2011. Recently I have run into this problem several times and it is becoming quite an issue. We push drawings through PLM, so one drawing will go back and forth to different people several times. Recently we have been coming across where a drawing that has been modified will lose it connection with the established surface it was original dimensioned too and will float in space. We often come across this and can handle it with no issue because the dimension then turns pink. In this case the line stays black but is not connected to the part. Also to add to our difficulty the dimension is only several thousand off of its original value so is easily looked over and usually looks in place. Any thought on this would be very much appreciated.
I think you are referring specifically to dimension Extension Lines.
What happens if you do a go to the Manage tab and Update?

Welcome to the forum.
Are these files locked down on a network? Are you running vault?
Are these lines in the drawings sketched lines or representing geometry from the model?
Can you post some images of this behavior?

This item is not in a vault and is locked buy the drafter using it. These are the actual extension lines of the dimension. This exampe was so far the most off and worst case we have had, usually it is only slightly off so that you would have to zoom very far in to notice it.
Are the dimensions imported from the model?
Those are the most secure.
Without actually being able to see am play with the files typically they don't change unless geometry is changing or someone is altering them without your knowledge. That is why I asked if they were secure. I see what you are describing, but like I said that comes after something has changed in the model.

Not sure what you mean by imported from the model. Points being dimensioned are from a model reference so it is pulling the data from the model directly and being dimensioned by the drafter. This is only happening when the model itself is being altered, but usally it shows pink and doesn't just grab a random place in space.

You can retrieve the dimensions from the model - (the actual dimensions used to create the model), or you can dimension (a second time) when creating the drawing views.
You didn't answer the question about Manage>Update.

This is what I was talking about (as JD described).

All our drafters dimmension a second time using the dimmension command. As for updating the drawing, that does not change anything. How would you go about retreiving the dimmension from the model?
Understand that by using this command means that your design intent is implemented into your model. Meaning the dimensions you want on your drawing need to exist within your model feature sketches.

Just saw second post, I will try out that command and see how it goes.
Be aware that the model can be changed from the drawing if you Retrieve Dimensions (unless that was disabled on install, not sure how to change that after install - if desired).

This is a very interesting option, although I think it might take a lot of effort to draft your model with the dimensions you would dimension your drawing with, it would surely pay out in the long run.
is there a way to privatly send a mesage on here? I would like to see if what I need to acheive with my drawing would work but dont want to publicly share the files.

Doesn't take all that much effort, but then, I used to work as a machinist out on the shop floor, so I tend to think in terms of the same datums I will use to manufacture. You can also add the tolerances to the model dimensions and test at upper, lower median limits for tolerance stack-ups between dimensions. (you probably won't achieve 100% retrieved dimensions)

Yeah it's not so much effort but just having to start doing your model while being conscious that you will have them reflect your drawing. I know a lot of times we model differently than how we pull our dims in the drawing. If someone would be willing to take a look at one of our models and drawings and see how useful it would be, I'd just like to do it privately.
If you click on the members ID it will bring up a screen that gives you the info on that member. Then in the upper portion on the right side of the screen will be a selection that allows you to send a provate message.
Now, some members have this option turned off, so if you don't see it that is why.
