Problems shelling a simple tube design

Someone please help.

Can someone explain why I'm getting an error shelling a simple tube? The
part shells fine with one or two branches, but when I change the rectangular
pattern to 3 occurances, I get an error.

This question will probably make much more sense when you look at the file
under ICF.

Thanks for any help.

Jeff,
It's there, but I think it's an R8 file.

It may be in your cache, but it was removed a while back. 8^)

Oops. I goofed.

Sorry about the "version" problem ;). Won't happen again. I posted the new
file just a few minutes ago under ICF.

Thanks for the help.

The part with three branches shells fine in the latest R8 build.

That's good. 8~)

Greg, it's just a bug. If you need the part, derive the solid body and shell
the derived part.

Loren,

Actually, I tried the shell using build 057d and still got the error. I
have no problem shelling the entire part (removing only the end faces of the
three small tubes), shelling the entire part (removing no faces), shelling
the entire part (removing the end faces of the three small tubes and the
front and back faces of the big tube), but I can't shell and remove the
three small tubes and only ONE face of the big tube. I have the same
problem with either version. Let me know if you have the same result.

Thanks

grag,
Put a little (2.5 mm works) on the sweep, move it up and add it to
the pattern. Then the shell solves.

Sorry, already burned it. Just put a small fillet (2.5 mm) at the
junction of the sweep and the extrusion. Then drag it up above right
below the sweep. Edit the pattern and add the fillet. Watch the shell
solve.

greg,
Check iCF for two solutions, under your thread. #2 (-dd2) is better,
as it retains your sharp intersections.

Good find, Darvin. Did you try it after filleting each pattern instance
seperately? 8~)

Greg, sorry to waste your time. I wasn't paying attention and excluded all 5
planar faces when I tried it (works with the original part, too).

Jeff,
Nope, ran out of steam and decided that using an extrusion cut on
the collector tube, followed by sweep cuts on the intakes, was a better
way to go. No need to mess up the original intent and kill the sharp
corners that way.
But I did notice, when applying the fillet, that the pattern
features previewed differently from the original sweep. Gut said, fillet
the original and add to the pattern. Sometimes that sinking feeling is
reliable.

Well, just beat it into a shell of it's former self. Of the 3 fillet
schemes, using2.5mm, only including it in the pattern allows the shell
to solve.

I opened the part with the failed shell, did a Rebuild All, and the shell
worked. The ASM team has made some improvements to the kernel since the beta
build was released.

Darvin,

Fogive me for being a mindless idiot. It took me at least 20 minutes of
reading the last few messages between you and Jeff and looking at your files
under ICF before I understood what you meant by a small fillet. Now I
understand and your work around is just what we were looking for.

Thanks again.
