Problem in orbiting or zomming parts

Hello,

We have a problem when rotating or zomming any part or assembly, there is a delay in inventor response to the command (about 3 - 5 sec)

we are using Inventor 2009 Prof.
Windows XP 32 bit
Dell Precision T5400
1 G of Ram (will be upgraded soon to 4G, but we have some stations with 2G and also have the same problem)
Quadro NVS 290 , Driver ver: 6.14.0011.8246
Intel Xeon quad core
Hardware : direct 3D

Hi,

From your pc spec's there are a few below-par components which could be
causing your performance issues.

1G ram - really need at least 2G min these days (probably more like 3G with
any curved surfaces parts or medium-sized assemblies), especially with the
Prof version which loads more into memory than the std version.

Quadro NVS - it's a 2d-specific gfx-card. They are intended for Excel and
Word, not 3d - If you're working with Direct 3D get a GeForce card (or
Quadro FX cards for Open GL mode).

You've got a quad-core processor which is usually overkill, so it's unlikely
to be the problem and certainly hampered by a bad gfx-card and severe lack
of ram.

Other areas to check - make sure ALL drivers are up to date, not just
gfx-card. Can have the latest, fastest, best gfx-card driver but if you've
got an out of date and/or bad chipset driver then it's all gone to waste.
Everything plugged into the pc, from mouse to soundcard all uses drivers
which take computer resources and memory (all talking to each other through
the mobo and it's chipset drivers) - if any 1 of these is a flunky release
and hogging resources it'll drag the rest down (especially with only 1G
ram).

Inventor - update all SP's and hardware lib's

Hope that helps

Thanks Sam for your support, But before we were using inventor 2008 and we never faced this problem, also we have the same problem on stations with 2G Ram.

Sam is correct. You have a marginal system at best. Every software
release takes a bit more memory. 2 GB Memory is the absolute least for
small parts and subassemblies. The NVS card is not recommended for CAD.

As far as the "everything worked fine on an older version of Inventor" comment. I had no issues using an ATI FireGL V3100 (cad workstation approved) card with INV 2008. But that same card with Inventor 2010 caused the same issue you see with slow zooming/panning. Not a 3-4 second pause but enough for me to immediately ditch that card for a more powerful one.

each release is a year on from the one before, is more complex and has more
add-ins running in the background (especially the pro. versions) - as such
the minimum system spec moves with it. With this in mind it's conceivable
that a pc that's on the cusp of usability with 1 release could be just over
the hill with the next release and struggling. Also, think 2008 was OpenGL
and you're now on Direct 3d with 2009 - so more has changed in this instance
than just the release number.

without upgrading anything I'd 1st check all drivers are up to date - as my
previous post.

memory is obviously a limiting factor in this case so strip off everything
that's not needed - just look at Task Manager's processes and work out where
you can prune. e.g. iTunes, just installed on a pc runs about 3 or 4
processes, even though to the user it's not running - msn is another hidden
hog. Virus scanners are another area to look at - Symantec and McAfee are
notorious resource hogs - try something slimline like Avast or AVG.

But, realistically, hate to say it, your pc's do need to be upgraded - and
make sure the cad-dept choose the components, not the IT dept (typically why
you end up with the wrong Quadro NVS card)

I am having similar issues with zooming. My computer should be adequate, right? (see attached)

I am using IV 2010 also. I have 6 gb of RAM (on Vista 64-bit). Is that the problem? I work with assemblies that are often 600-1500 parts.
