Print screen?

Trying to print a screen image of a Inventor dialog box. Using Windows 2K
Pro, no SP's. Looked in the windows help files, no help there? BTW, would
installing the windows SP's improve inventor's performance?
Thanks, Bob

just press the Print Screen button on your keyboard, then go into MSPaint or
whatever and press Paste (CTRL-V)....

installing SP's is recommended, for sure... (if for nothing else but
security).

Try this; it should work...

Get your screen looking the way you want it (mind where your mouse curser is
placed), then: Control+Print Screen. This sends the screen image to
clipboard. Open MS Paint, and paste as a new document. Then you can print
from there. The old Print Screen command was a DOS thing; Windows takes an
extra step.

As for the SPs, I've always kept current on them. I know with earlier
versions of Inventor that having the latest Windows service packs helped
performance. I assume it's still true.

Cheers,
Walt

I've got the following info from Windows 2000 Help:

To make a copy of only the active window,
press ALT+PRINT SCREEN.

To copy the entire screen as it appears on your monitor,
press PRINT SCREEN.

The CTRL key seems like a no-op in this case
(i.e., CTRL+PRINT SCREEN = PRINT SCREEN).

Use this to make a copy of your application options settings, then if you
crash or reinstall you have an easy copy.

I do this for most of my software that I have customized settings for. Create a Word document (for example) and Alt+Prt Scrn from the app settings to the Word doc. Quick and easy.

Oops. You're right. A long time ago, I saw an IT guy Ctrl+Print Screen,
and I've been doing it every since.

Funny, some of the stuff we 'know' sometimes. Sorry about the bad info.

FYI: print screen images are in BMP format which is rather large. A word
doc can get mighty large with these screen caps. For my tutorials I paste
them into paint then save as JPEG and then repaste into Word. It reduces
the file sizes by 1/5 of the old size in many cases....

For posting to the internet you're exaclty right. For a doc I keep on my HD for my own use Cut/Paste bmp's is easier. I've got the HD space.

Sean,

You're right about JPEG file size being much smaller than BMP file.
But I'm not sure about inserting JPEG into Word. This is what I
found from a little experiment:

1. Alt+Print Scrn > Paste into Paint >
> Save as 24-bit BMP (BMP file size = 2,417 KB)
> Insert BMP file into Word (DOC file size = 85 KB)

2. Alt+Print Scrn > Paste into Word (DOC file size = 85 KB)

3. Alt+Print Scrn > Paste into Paint >
> Save as JPEG (JPEG file size = 161 KB)
> Insert JPEG file into Word (DOC file size = 181 KB)

Hmm...It's been a while but I was having problem with my Word docs getting
to be 100+MB. I don't recall the exact prodeduce but there is a difference
between cut and pasting in a JPEG and insert from a file I belive.

My experiment: (all in kB)

JPEG Size: 245
BMP Size: 3841
GIF Size: 299

BMP Pasted into Word: 4,189
BMP Inserted in Word: 173

JPEG Pasted into Word: 5,335
JPEG Inserted in Word: 266

GIF Pasted into Word:1,846
GIF Inserted in Word: 292

I guess I was rememebring wrong. It must have been GIF files I used...

I forget all of that color math I used to know and how to optimize image
sizes....
