Possible to Dim detail view from original origin?

I want to dimension a detail view from the original origin point. Can IV do this?

It doesn't appear to me that we are able to show work features in a detail view. I
thought maybe if you turned on the workpoint in the parent and then created the detail to
include the point it would, but no luck.

Double click on the view, go to the Options tab and turn on Show Contents and Work Features. In the browser expand the view and make visible the Center Point.

Does it work for you in a Detail view? Not for me?

Yes it works for me in a Detail View. Use the procedure I mentioned on the Detail View.

Duhhh I was so intent on doing it in the browser I missed that you were doing it in the
view edit dialog.

Wonder why it works one place and not the other or what the difference is between the two
methods?

Actually it isn't really working anyhow. The part I picked happened to have the origin
point a ways off the part, and it will show up in the Base sketch but the detail doesn't
get big enough to include it no matter how big I make the detail circle. Also what is
the deal with once you have turned it on, it is grayed and you can't turn it off? Is
that a bug or as designed?

You can't do it all from the browser because you have to turn on the display of Work Features in the Edit Drawing View dialog box.

I think the inability to turn off the Workplanes checkbox is a bug since the help file mentions that you should be able to do so.

Not true. In a base view rmb in the browser and select show contents. then rmb on the
first part and select show work features (or something like that can't check the wording
right now) It works fine in a Base view...and I think a projected view, but not in a
detail.

Well gggaaawwwlllleeeee! (aka Barney Fife)

Why didn't I ever find that RMB => Show Work Features option? (don't answer that!)

Still don't understand why you are having trouble accessing Work Features in a detail view.

Well since both of us are having little mini discovery's I guess we can drag this out a
little longer

Here is what I see

RMB on part exposed in browser in base view... Can Show work features
RMB on part exposed in browser in Detail view... no context menu for show work features

Edit Detail view and turn on work features...
If originpoint is close enough to the Part in the detail it shows
If originpoint is a bit off the part ... as is the case in most master sketch type of
parts no matter how you adjust the detail view circle in the parent you can't get it to
include the originpoint, because the viewborder basically only pays attention to the Part
edges it appears. It ignores the work feature when making the view border.

Does that make any sense or you going to throw me in the Mayberry jail for babbling a lot
of nonsense?

Ok, makes sense that you wouldn't see the Center Point since it would be located beyond the Detail View's border. But you can place a work feature in the model (say a midplane) and then use that midplane to dimension off of in a detail view.

I'll dismiss the babbling charge since it's time for me to go fishin'. B-)

MechMan:

Can you set the "origin" for ordinate dimensions
using a work point
in a base view of a
idw?

In other words:

1.) I started a part, the first thing I did,
was to
project a center point.

2.) Created the part, but there is no geometry
on the projected center point, although all
geometry is dimensioned from that point.

I created a work point on the projected
center point, and I now want to use that point as
"0,0" in a base view
on a idw.

Is this possible?

I can send an example to CF if
necessary.

Yes, read the earlier posts in this thread. The approach above works for ordinate dimensions as well.
