Please help with Library issue.

I am good enough with Inventor 2011 to design, but I don't have a great (very little) understanding of the library and inability to edit components. One of my first projects given to me at work is to figure out how to permanently assign our part numbers into the iProperties-Custom-Name-Value location for Library parts. Currently our engineers are forced to look up each individual part number for standard fasteners to manually insert the information into each BOM. This is a huge waste of time and resources. We do not use Vault.

Any input is extremely appreciated, fresh out of college and hope to start off on the right foot.

Welcome to the forum.

If you search you will find several threads talking about this.  Here is one that speaks on how to not only add iproperties to parts, but how to place them in your templates which sounds like a really good idea for what you are describing.

If you look in the help file that will wxplain how to add the iproperties into your factory table.

Hi WagnerBEP,

It's unlcear to me what you are referring to as  "Library parts", but there are 3 common ways in which Library parts are created in Inventor.

1) iPart factories that the user setups to create part families: http://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2014/ENU/Inventor/files/GUID-DD9F389B-4B23-482A-A46E-4CA71101658A...

2) You create your own parts and save them to a folder that you have designated as a read only library location in your project file. See this  link for more about librarby paths: http://help.autodesk.com/cloudhelp/2014/ENU/Inventor/files/GUID-45FF437D-B059-45A5-9B0F-D71E8C97A2BF...

3) Parts created from the Content Center are created and stored as read only library parts.

If you are talking about editing the Content Center  (CC) files in order to apply your own part numbers to the CC library files, you'll do this by copying the CC library database files using the CC Editor and then modifying the tables in the new CC library database file.

Most likely you will also need to go to the Tools tab > Application Options button > Content Center tab, and set the Refresh Out Of Date Standard Parts During Placement option.  See this link:

The PDF at this link might help also:

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis

Thank you for the advice, guys. I'll use all of this to figure out the best route for what we need.
