Is there a way to make a sketch from a photograph?

Do you mean automatically?
I don't know how that would work.

What I do with really freeform stuff is trace over the photo and then scan that in and place into my sketch as a rough guide. I prefer to simplify with my traced sketch of the major edges rather than try to make out contrast of a photo when creating Inventor sketches.

I think there is an example tutorial somewhere using a corkscrew handle.

A lot of graphics programs have a raster to vector converter. I haven't
messed with it for a long time, but you could check into this
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/heatons/softsoft/wintopo/ If I remember right
it takes things like jpegs and converts them to dxf so you could import them
into Inventor.

I know Walt Jaquith was playing around with this program.
http://www.photomodeler.com/ I think he said it worked pretty well.

There are raster to vector conversion utilities out there but the free ones
require way too much cleanup.

There are also companies out there that will convert your artwork to very
clean vectors (we had our logo done that way)

The way I do it in IV is get a nice (high res) image, bring it in and very
tediously place sketch points along the shape then use splines to connect
the dots.

If you have a digital image, insert the photograph in a sketch. Create a
rectangle, based on the size of the image to control its size.
Then start sketching (by tracing) points, lines, arcs, etc. for the basic
shape. You can then add constraints, dimensions, etc. to get your desired
shape. You can toggle the visibility of the image, in the browser.

See attached sample.
