Periodically Deleting Old Vers Folders?

Periodically Deleting Old Vers Folders, is there a problem with doing this?

I just do a search for any folders named old version and then delete them
all.

I have only done this once and it did not seem to cause any problems and I
figure I will do it once a week or so just to keep the size down.

All it will do is lose your old versions - if you don't need them, no
problem.

As long as you're sure you won't have to back up (from your drafting
table) to recover work. I delete mine about once a week. You know that
you can set them for many versions?

Silly me... I have to ask WHY? You probably have the strongest machine I
have seen specs of posted here, so I can't imagine a company that would buy
something like that is shy on space.... so what is the purpose of deleting
them? Boredom setting in because you are getting so much done with R7
compared to R5.3 8^))

I never thought about deleting these files either Kent - with my Dual 120GB
drives and such - but then when I read his message I went and deleted all
the "oldversions" folders on my M50 notebook I was working on at the time -
1GB of data taking up my 30GB HD.

When I got home, I did the same on my main workstation - 2GB of data! WOW!

Deleting is easier, but why not use Purge or Purge All to clean them out?
Inventor is just going to create the OldVersions folder anyway.

What is "purge"? Is this a windows or Inventor thing?

It cleans out the OldVersions folder when RMB a specific file. If you RMB a
folder, it cleans out everything.

P.S.
It's an Inventor thing.

I will still take giving up the unneeded space to have a recovery method when needed. If
it gets to a point where we are tight on diskspace I will consider doing something. If
anything I would probably make a batch file that only deletes them after they are a month
old or something like that.

I agree- but I had my old versions set to 8 for current projects and there
were a LOT of old projects that are closed and over with that I never
purged.

I was just surprised at the amount of space I was taking up on the small
30GB drive on the notebook.

Hey Kent, I take my work home with me on an external HD and it is
synchronized to the main HD that all of our CAD data is on and any extra
files makes the sync. take longer.
The bottom line is I have a real personal issue with the stupid "old
versions folder"..after all R7 works so well I need something to complain
about
