People who wanted a surfaces tutorial....

What do you want me to use as an example? I'm don't usually design swoopy
shapes so I'm not sure what you guys want to see.

I played around with an example last night (See CF under Cell Phone Shell).
I didn't have my phone with me so I guessed at some dims and it was a quick
and crude model. It wasn't too far off. In the tutorial I'd flesh it out a
bit more...

This model uses extruded and revolved surfaces, surface lofts, knit
surfaces, thicken surface, emboss, decal and standard extrude tools.

Anyway, want to see how to make this as an example? If not give me another
suggestion. I guess I'm just having writers' block.

And we're again allowed to take a small break for every hour
and a bigger one for every day?

Sean,
As soon as I posted my vote for a surface tutorial, I started thinking about
what I would like to see. I guess I'm having my biggest difficulties
working through the loft form. Sometimes it gives me errors "pick a region"
and sometimes not. Sometimes it will allow me to pick curves and other
times it won't. I'm going to have to start documenting the problems I'm
having with the form. But I think some varieties of lofts and making use of
3d intersections in lofts might help.

Most of my work is with motorcycle gas tanks and fenders. I receive 'iges'
files from my customers and most of the time the surfaces will not stitch
together. They either overlap by 0.000012, or there is a gap of 0.00002.
What are my options for building new surfaces, from the ones that are there,
and replacing the originals. In MDT I used to untrim the original and
retrim to the "other" trim edge. Most of my finished diework is good if
it's within .0005-.001. But the CAD and the CNC demands exactness (is that
a word?).

I'm still plugging away at this (fortunately, we aren't very busy right
now), and I just got my "Autodesk Inventor 6 Essentials" in the mail. So I
may get this figured out yet.

One hint I can give in respect to the "please choose a region" error is
this.

Select the sketch from the browser OR click on the sketch once to activate
it and again to select just the sketch). Sometimes IV thinks you are
waiting to choose a region (even on non closed loops) I agree that the
interface is a bit finicky sometimes...

Can you send me an example of one of the completed tanks. Maybe this would
be a good example.

When it wants you to pick a region on a surface/solid sketch, there are
probably at least two valid solutions. The loft command picks all solution
outlines initially and ask you to pick the region(s) you want to be
included.

Is there a way to do a uv surface as in amloftuv in MDT?
I like the fact that Inventor allows surfaces to be parametrically defined so that I can go back and change the surface after cutting the solid, but I have not found a way to define both u and the v direction splines. Perhaps you can find a solution to this problem to include in your tutorial.

In the cases I've seen this happen thee is only one solution. You have an
open profile loop and lofting a surface to another open profile loop. What
other solution could you have?

I don't remember seeing that on just open loops with absolutely no other
geometry on any sketch. In that case, Least I can't remember ever seeing the
pick region error. I think I have mainly seen it when I had to use Click to
add or pick surface in the case of at least one closed loop. Can you make a
three-point arc (nothing else) on two or three offset workplanes, loft it
and get the region error?

Actually now that I think about it the first sketch may have been "closed'
due to a projected axis. I'll play around some more and see if that was the
reason for it...

Right now I'm kind of involved in another project. I'll give your
suggestion a try...

ALL the parts I get are proprietary. I could maybe throw something together
that would be similar. But I don't want to violate our Non-Disclosure
agreements.

This month's challenge is "definately doable in 5.3 Sp0" as Steven Strik
puts it.
Just make sure your loft profiles are plane/clean cut.
