You install Distiller and/or PDF Writer in the printer setup dialog then
print to that printer.

You need a program that can make PDFs. There are several free ones out
there as well as Adobe Acrobat. Basically the place a virtual printer on
your system to print PDF from.

I make most of my idws into pdf files, but you are correct that there is no
built-in feature in Inventor to do it. I use Adobe Acrobat. Other than the
$200 for the software, it is no extra work because I have set up the Adobe
Distiller as my printer. Just performing the print function automatically
creates the pdf file. If I want a paper print, I just print the pdf file.
There are less costly pdf writers available than Adobe. There used to be
some free ones. I don't know if there are still some of those available. I
find the $200 worthwhile, but if the cost is a problem, search for pdf
writers or pdf creators and see what low cost or free options are available.

It's a confusing concept at first. A PDF "printer" actually creates a PDF file instead of sending info to the printer.

I actually have Adobe Acrobat which comes with the "printer" but I've heard some positive posts about a free PDF printer at www.pdf995.com in this NG.

Thanks Brian, you have just asked, and Larry, Mechman, Sean and Ed have just
answered one of my queries.
I'm downloading the software now.

Best wishes all

While the $200 software does a lot of things the other don't do, I prefer
Win2PDF and Jaws.  I have actually purchased most of the PDF file creators
(including Adobe) and for just slamming out PDF files in mass, I use the
lower cost ones.  GhostScript is available for free but takes some doing
to set up.

I noticed this one from following a link yesterday. It seems like a reasonable price if
it works well. Anybody using it? http://www.software602.com/products/printpack/

I use 5D but unfortunately it is not free anymore.
