pattern component along a path

Is it possible to pattern a component along a 2d or 3d sketch in an
assembly? Are there any sample assemblies available showing this?

AFIK no. No option to 3D assembly sketch either.

You can create a part with a feature pattern (workpoints & sketch) place it into the assembly and make your component pattern associative to it.
