Parts List and Qty Question

Parts List and Qty Question

Say I have an assembly that contains 10 of the exact same parts. I can create a parts list in the assembly drawing (idw), and the "Qty" indicated in the parts list is "10".

Now, say I create a new drawing sheet, and detail the part. When I create a "parts list" for the detail the "Qty" is "1".

WHY... if there are 10 of the same, why is only 1 listed.

If I send the detail drawing to my toolmaker, and do not send the assembly, then he would make only 1 part when I really need 10.

Yes... I can create a new column and manually enter 10, but what if then add one to the assembly and forget to update the parts list for the detail.

Why is this not automatic?

Any workarounds that are "AUTOMATIC"... I.E, change the qty in the assembly (iam), and then the assembly idw, and the detail idw parts lists automatically update to the correct qty.

Regards,

Don A 🙂

Our company does not use the parts list on the drawing to determine the
number of parts ordered at a time, we use the purchase order to specify
that.

The detail drawing qty is correct, there is only 1 part that you have
selected. The other thing to consider is, if you were to use that part
in another assembly and the parts list included those occurrences also,
then you would order too many parts.

I don't usually put a parts list on anything but the assemblies. Then I
cheat and use the datum target identifier instead of balloons to put the
item number in the top field and the detail sheet number in the lower field.
I'm sure the developers would like to get the drawing module shortcomings
sorted out but the problem is: they don't get to say what they work on;
evidently, the Golden Parachute crowd gets to say.

Hal,

You make a good point.

In my particular case I use inventor to design molds.

Molds, can be considered as "one unit" consisting of many components. In some case, some components are all the same. Such as 4 Cavities, 4 guide pins, 12 core pins style A, 48 core pins style B, 2 runner blocks, and so on.

It is customary to have the "qty" (Amount required))show for each component in the assembly. However, each of the individual components within the assembly may go to different moldmakers for manufacturer, and the assembly drawing is not always at their disposal, as well It may not need be.

In this case the "qty" needs to "tag along" with the detail drawing. In reality a "required" column is really whats needed to tag along with the detail. Then a "Manual Qty to make" column could be used/added on the detail sheet. The default would be to make the "required" if the "Qty" colum were left blank.

In any event what I am really looking for then is a change in terminology. "Required" would be more appropriate, and which is what I would want to be the same on the assembly as well as the detail sheet... again "Automatic" and automatically updatable on both.

Anyway that that can be accompolihed works for me.

and THANKS,

Well the 'required' column is easy, just go into the column chooser and
create a custom column. This can be done in your master template and it
will then be available to add to the PL in all dwgs. As far as making
the quantity automatic, haven't got a clue there.

Thanks Hal,

I am familiar with the "Custom Column".

Guess what I really nead is that "Clue" to make them automatic, and syncronized. Anyone have that "Clue"

A few workarounds.  Have an assembly view off
of the page and use that to create the parts list.  Make all the rows
invisible except the one that you are working on.  Create the part drawing
using design views from the assembly with only the one part visible.  Then
repeat with the parts list as above.

Thanks Kathy,

I like the assembly out of sight concept. Would have never thought of it. Simple is as simple does.

DonA,

Only at the assembly level rather than at the part level can part
quantities be determined by Inv. Therefore only an idw depicting the
assy view(s) can provide quantity data. I do not know of a easy way to
achieve this (nor have I tried as this will have problems with common
parts that are used in many assemblies).

I guess you could place a view of the assembly (off the idw sheet
area)to enable the part quantity come through for the part. This is a
heavy processing overhead if your assy have many components.

What I hope will one day be possible is for DA to take care of
quantities and item numbering of parts and assemblies. Then you could
have a central location to format this data to suit your project
requirements. DA should be able to easily construct this information.
Common parts/assys that are used over different projects could be
tackled here in some manner.
(This would be a big winner for me)

Many companies do not duplicate item numbers within a project between
different assembles. So item (1) is seen only once throughout that
project. As the software behaves now, life for those folks is difficult
indeed with lots of item renumbering.......
