Optimal positioning

Hi!

I want to place circles (all the same size) onto a confined area in a sketch so that they don't touch and that they optimally cover the area.

Can this be done with Inventor? Or AutoCAD? Or anything else for that matter?

Thanks!

Riido

the optimal placement of circles are out from a central circle... its the nature of the beast 🙂

what are the size contraints and how far apart must they be?

It is for LED advertisement texts. You have to position the LEDs inside letters as uniformly as possible so that the letter will be evenly bright. I use circles to signify a tested radius of an LEDs effective lighting.

Nope.. It has been a requested feature but never implemented.

But just use an array and suppress the ones you don't need.

It's too time consuming to do it by hand on some more elaborate fonts.
Does anybody know of a different software capable of doing this and exporting the result to either AutoCAD or Inventor?

Are the circles all the same size, or different for each LED? And i suspect the area is not always square, rectangle or round?

All circles are the same size for one sign.

You might be able to do this in SolidWorks with Fill Pattern (quick and dirty example shown).

^^ Wonder how long solidworks has had that functionality.. that is NEAT. (and useful..I can think of a half a dozen times in the last year or so that I could have used that functionality..)

No circle fill in inventor? perhaps you should look into making a fill type for what you need, but I expect it wouldn't work the same and would cut circles off where they crossed the edges.

There is a program that can do this, I just discovered.

Here is a short video:

Is such a thing really not possible in Inventor OR SW?

PS. I tried Fill Pattern in SW, but the end result was less than satisfactory, though I'm not sure it isn't down to user-error on my behalf.

Have a look at: http://modthemachine.typepad.com/my_weblog/2013/03/control-feature-creation-based-on-user-defined-bo... that looks a bit like you are looking for.
