Opening an assembly STEP file in Inventor 2013. Only get a part file.

I have an assembly step file that was sent to me by a customer. I have tried to open this step file in Inventor 2013 using the many "create surfaces as" options with the "Import Assembly as single part" left unchecked & I still get a single part file with alot of base surfaces. However, each time the solid bodies come in as what looks like possible part files.

Questions:

1. am I missing something in the translation process set-up or did the customer create the STEP file in such a way that I can only produce the part file when opened.

2. Can I export the solid bodies to their own part file in Inventor 2013?

Hi,

Yes you can create a IPT file from each solid bodie.

During Import, check the Multiple Solid Part to import the assembly as individual solid bodies in the part environment.

Then go to Manage tab \  Make Components to select which solid wants to export as IPT.

Can you zip and attach the STEP file here?

Hi Maria,

Thank you for responding to my post. I tried the solution you proposed. There are 213 solid bodies in this assembly. I selected the "Make Components" & chose the solid bodies I needed. (tried different quantities) I choose the next button & the software seems to wait. Down in the lower left corner of my screen I get 2 messages. One is "select only blocks or only bodies" the other is "click to continue". The items I'm selecting are located inder the "Solid Bodies" folder. In the folder each solid bodie has it's own name & looks to have a part icon with it. When I expand the icon it shows there is a base to it. I have attachd a zip file of the step file if you'd like a go of it.

Are you sure the step file is an assembly and not a multi-body?

Hi rdyson,

I'm not sure how the assembly was created.

Well, you can always push out the multi-body as an iam, you'll just have to rename all the bits (if needed).

Hi Maria,

Thanks for uploading those files. I don't have anything to open them with as I have Inventor 2013. Tried using the 2014 viewer but can't do anything but read the files. I did however, retry your steps again for creating ipt files from solid bodies and it worked this time. Not sure what happened yesterday. Thanks again for all your help.
