Nonplanar sketch

I need to draw splines on nonplanar faces. I use AI5.3 in my company. I am rather new to Inventor but I know that such direct nonplanar sketching (not by projecting) is not possible in this program. Does anybody know if it is possible in AI8.0? Does anybody know if it is possible in other programs eg. SolidWorks or I-deas? Regards, Zdzislaw Cieslak

Yes. AI8 can make non-planar splines. It's called a 3D Sketch. -- Rui "zdzislaw cieslak" wrote in message news:4085715f$1_2@newsprd01... > I need to draw splines on nonplanar faces. Or, more concisely a 3D spline. Just create workpoints in space, 3DSketch -->line pull-down-->3DSpline. It is great for modeling hose, cables, etc using the Sweep feature. zdzislaw, To answer your first question, an easy way to create splines on non-planar faces would be to create an 3D intersection curve. Create a 2DSketch on a workplane above the surfaces. Create a 2D spline in the sketch. Extrude the 2D spline as a surface far enough to intersect the non-planar surfaces Create a 3D sketch, then create a 3D intersection curve using the extruded spline and the non-planar surfaces. Please let us know if this worked for you. Best regards, Hugh Henderson (Autodesk) "Rui Vaz" wrote in message news:408581e7$1_1@newsprd01... > Yes. Rui, I thought I made a second posting to this thread, but it was somehow lost. I wanted to answer your question more specifically. You can create 3D splines on non-planar faces very easily in Inventor_8 using what's called a 3DIntersection Curve. Extrude a 2DSpline as a surface that intersects the non-planar faces. Create a 3DSketch. You can then create a 3DIntersection curve of the Spline surface and non-planar faces. I would recommend downloading a trial version of Inventor_8 and give it a whirl. Hugh I see three responses from you in this thread. Sometimes it takes a while for things to sync between the NNTP side and the HTTP side. Hugh I see 3 answers of yours. I didn't mention the intersection method since I assumed that existed in 5.3 and was not what zdzislaw wanted. Since 3D Splines are now possible in IV8, albeit less controlled than the intersection method, I thought that was more in line with the question.....but I could be completely wrong. -- Rui "Hugh Henderson (Autodesk)" wrote in message news:4085a28b$2_3@newsprd01... > Rui, > > I thought I made a second posting to this thread, but it was somehow lost. > > I wanted to answer your question more specifically. > > You can create 3D splines on non-planar faces very easily in Inventor_8 > using what's called a 3DIntersection Curve. > > Extrude a 2DSpline as a surface that intersects the non-planar faces. > > Create a 3DSketch. Rui and Kent, Thanks so much for pointing that out. I was wondering why I'd see new topics with the subject Re: xxxxx I just had to use the Headers button on the standard toolbar in OE. Now I see my postings! :o) Hugh Henderson (Autodesk) P.S. Seriously, I wan't trying to be a Post W____. Zdzislaw Cieslak,
One of my students is making extensive use of non-planar sketches. (see attached)
You might also want to check IVCF for the October 2003 challenge results.

Don't know about those two programs, but do know of two others, one mid-range priced and one lower priced that have "curve on surface" type functions. The surface intersection methods for creating curves that lie on a surface are ok and sometimes preferable to other methods, but, as you can imagine, result in a significant increase in operator effort and overhead. =============================

Just out of curiosity, what would you use the curves for? While it is extra overhead, for most people it's not an issue. Just for fun I ran a comparison test. The task was to create a G1 continuous trim curve on the round surface in the attachment (don't know if you can read the surfaces in the .sat in 5.3). Using a software that will create a curve on surface it took about 50 seconds (pick two points, constrain tangent to edges, constrain to surface). Creating the trimming surface in inventor took about 1 min. 55 seconds (create work plane, project edges, create and constrain spline, extrude surface). ======================================== "zdzislaw cieslak" wrote in message news:4086eadf_1@newsprd01... > Thanks for your reply. > I'll try intersection method but it seems to me rather laborious - it > demands great number of work features. > Frankly speaking I hoped to find in AI8.0 something like a drawing on a mesh > with the aid of snap, for sure less precise but easier and faster. > Regards, > Zdzislaw Cieslak
