Just kidding..

Get the best gaming computer you can afford. Don't go on the workstation graphics card like we have here in the office.

Get 16GB of ram or more and the fastest cpu you can afford. Invetor can only use 1 cpu core for some things, so speed is more important than number of cores/threads. Also like pointed out above get a good gaming graphics card, much better performance for the money compared to a work station card. Don't forget to get an SSD to install windows and Inventor on, if you need storage space get a second hard drive to store files on.

If the cost isn't an issue just go to alienware.com and get the biggest machine they offer and you'll be set.

I just recently installed 2 SSDs in Raid 0. It helps a great deal with opening files etc. It cut opening one of my assemblies from 12 minutes to 6 ish. (the machine used to have a 7200 RPM Seagate in it).

I agree about the video cards - geforce is all you need.

Processor(s) - more and more of Inventor and Vault are using multiple cores, so it depends where you will be spending most of your time in IV. If you are doing any rendering or FEA for example, you will want as many cores as you can find.

Ram - I wouldn't buy a desktop with less than 32 Gbs - If I could, I would go to 64 Gbs.

Bear in mind most of my assemblies are large - from 20000 to 45000 components...
