Neat Dimension Tool.

It would be Neato if there was a Loop Dim tool.
Work like Leader text maybe.. But Display the Loop Length of the selected Contour..
That would be so very handy.
Currently, I have to go to the Model and Use the Measure loop tool, jot down the Number and then add a Leader text to the Drawing. Problems arise because it's Just text.. Anytime something changes with the contour I have to redo it.
Be so nice if that Dim was linked... Like a regular dimension.

Just a thought..

You might want to submit this wish to http://www.augi.com/inventor/default.asp

I'd also like to see the ability to measure the length of an open ended (poly) line. In sketch mode would be fine. If it can do closed loops it shouldn't be too much of a stretch to do open "loops".

oh how hard can it be?

:)

but yes, this functionality would be fantastically handy for estimating the cost of, say, laser time.

That's basically what I use the loop measurement for..
For figuring the Wire EDM time, When i Quote a New Tool.
And also with Build & lead timing for the tooling.
Also for tonnage req's too..
Basically I use it A Lot..

you'd have to create parameters that calculate arc length and add line lengths together to get loop lengths in a parameter, then call out the parameter in the .idw.

depending on complexity, this could easily be more overhead than measuring -> dumb text.

I've seen an add in that copies measured values like surface area and volume to custom iProps. Some tweaking of the code could possibly get you where you need it.

I too would love this for my bent extruded tubes.

Ideal functionality:
1: Click a Button.
2: Select the contour.
3: Place the Dimesnion.

Or. Intergrate with existing Dimension.
1: Click Dimension Button.
2: RMB for the Type menu. have Loop length as an Option.
3: Place the Dim.

The Data is there already isn't it.
When in an Idw sketch.. it has Close Loop.. and it Knows there is a Loop there to be able to hatch..

We can measure Loop Length in Ipt's and Iam's already.
So the data must be there already?
Just guessing though..

But whatever the case...
The main Point and Reason is to Eliminate the chance of a Mistake. (By forgetting to re-Measure and manually Update the leader text)

Add In.. I'll hafta Look.
Thanks.

If you're using R11, have you looked at using AutoLimits for getting the
feedback?

Well, I have checked into that..
Using the Perimeter Autolimit..
Have not figured out how to get that data into a Callout on the Idw though.. Like in a Leader text...

For me.. Perimeter Autolimit works much better than than the Measure Loop tool.... But Still.. It just gives me the number.. Which I still have to Jot down and enter into the Leader text..

But if there is a Way to link it to the Leader text.. that might work..

Having to Set up autolimits for each contour might be a bigger pain though..

Thanks Bill.

Bill, just spent a lil bit experimenting with Autolimits.
I just have to ask, What are they for??
Sure it seems to be a great High tech measuring tool..
But what can be done with the Measurments?
I'm probably missing something but I can't figure out how to do Anything with the measurements other than look at them.
Can't seem to tie the measurment to any iProps..
Can't seem to get them tied into parameters..
Can't seem to get them into Idw text, Dim's, leaders etc..
What can I do with the measurments?

I do really Like being able to select bunch of Loops and how it gives me the cummulative length..
That's great.. Saves me from having to enter the numbers into my calculator...
But it'd be nice to be able to do something with the data..

Good feedback. I appreciate what you're saying.
So, I'll take this feedback, and other, and see what we can do with it.

Thanks,

I also would like to link the perimeter of an object to an .idw.

Has any progress been made on this issue yet?

If the part that needs the loop measured is a sheet metal part then I have a macro (supplied by a friend) that generates 3 Custom iProperties, InnerPerimeters (all internal shape holes/cutouts lengths added together), Outerperimeter (the outer shape length and TotalPerimeters that adds the previous 2 together. Let me know if this is of any use and I can post it.

Give this a try for Laser Cuts.  Has some pretty nice options to it.

Brendan, Mark,

Thanks for replying. The perimeter I require however is the end profile of an alunimium extrusion.

The iLaserCut app is a nice little addin but only worked in the flat pattern environment and I presume the app you had in mind does the same Brendan.

If their is an app that would write the autolimits value out to the Properties dialogue, that would be useful.
