My Documents is read only?

IV7: I started a new assembly based on Standard(mm).iam with the Default
project. When I am in the "Create Component" dialogue, and accept the
default location (My Documents) for the file, An exclamation error states
that "C:\Documents and Settings\Linnet\My Documents is read only, please
select another directory", with only an OK button to click.

Windows XP Pro, P4, etc.
(does it on the P3 as well with IV6 SP1, XP Pro - this is set up as Inches
for default units).

What's up with that? I have administrative rights. I never noticed that the
directory is read only before, but apparently it is. Funny thing is that I
don't get this error when I create a Standard(mm).ipt. And another thing - I
don't get this error when I right a Word document to My Documents. I get
this error only in Inventor with the above conditions.

Stumped,
Linnet

Thanks for the reply. But this is not the case. The FAQ you referenced does
not apply.

And I quote, "5.) Why do I get an error about not being able to edit a file?
In R6 any file referred to in a library path cannot be edited. To edit
these files you either need to move the library file out of the library
path, edit it and then return it to the library or create a new project file
that refersto this file as a local or workgroup (non-library) path."

But the "out-of-the-box" Default project has no paths defined whatsoever.
Indeed, I am not trying to edit a file, I am trying to create a new file
while in a new assembly. Whatsmore, if I explicitly add the aforementioned
"My Documents" directory to either and both (in successive tries) the Local
and Workgroup paths in the Default project, the same error still results!

Any other suggestions?

Linnet,

Add the line:

My Documents=C:\Documents and Settings\Linnet\My Documents

to the Workspace and see what happens.

Are you able to save if you create and activate a new Project File?

What is your Projects Folder set to (the place where the IPJ shortcuts are
stored) in Tools->App Options->Files Tab?

Have you read the IV7 File Management.doc in the /Documentation folder on
the IV install disk?

It seems to me that IV7 is very particular with its Workspaces-perhaps IV is
marking the parts internally as living in the Template directory (because
the ipj has NO directories called) and since the "my documents" folder is
obviously not a sub-folder, then it won't allow the save. myself at this point>

I realize this sounds way out there in left field, but once you work in a
semi-isolated project schema and see IV moving files AND directories around
all by itself, you start appreciating just how important these Project File
things are.

I'm sure this problem can be sorted, more information may simply be needed.

Still tells me that the folder is read only . . .

C:\Documents and Settings\Linnet\My Documents

Yes, several times.

It seemed to me that the main advantage of having My Documents as the
Default location (at least I THOUGHT that's what Autodesk intended) was that
it is a relative statement - in this way any user that works in Inventor and
does not steer his files will, by default, place HIS/HER documents in
HIS/HER My Documents folder - an automatic project filing system that is
universal for all the users that use the same project file. Linnet uses the
"Default" project and her files go into Linnet\My Documents. Wesley later
logs on and uses the SAME "Default" project and his files automatically go
into "Wesley\My Documents". I _know_ how to create projects but thought the
Default project provided by Autodesk was supposed to actually _WORK_ .
Imagine the consternation at trying to tutor my son and finding that this
feature, out-of-the-box, does not work.

At this point I'm considering this a bug in Inventor at least back to IV6
SP1. Features out-of-the-box should work without any tweaking.

Do you have a "Default" project? What happens when you go to try to start a
new assembly, and then try to Create a component in that assembly? Does
Inventor go blonde on you too?
Thanks for the help!

I use the default.ivb often and have no problems with it. The only thing
blonde is the icon 8^)

It may possibly have something to do with having administrative rights or
not?? I don't think I have ever worked on a computer that doesn't so I am
just guessing??

And when you save do the files go into your "My Documents"?

Actually they default to save to the last directory I saved or opened a file
from.

Linnet,

No, I have never used the "default" project.

I was under the assumption that it simply needed to be there so IV can
actually get on its feet the first time 'round.... kinda like the Default
Dimstyles/Textstyles that can't be deleted.

I have never heard of anyone actually expecting to use the "my document"
folders specifically with IV in this manner.... even in Semi-Isolated a
unique Workspace is called in the user's personal project with the "group"
project file (residing with the project itself on the server) brought in as
included paths.

In the end, I simply don't see your point about trying to use the "my
documents" folder exclusively. I do agree that it is a very strange
phenomenon that you are unable to save to the folder even if it is called
out in a project.

Just a thought

Have you checked in windows explorer to see if your "my documents " folder is checked read only?

Dale,

As I said before, I discovered recently that the
"My Documents" folder for me (administrator) is dubbed read-only, as well as all
other users. I confirmed this fact on another XP machine of mine. It's quite
odd, but I cannot clear the read-only status, but no other program seems to
really care. I think it's more of a security issue related to the fact that some
users have adminstrator rights and others have "limited" rights. It's more of a
curiosity now, since I have set up a "Learning" folder for Wesley. It just seems
it should just work. Like the Honda commercial said. I guess the opposite is,
"It's not very nice when things just don't work".

Thank you each of you for providing
input.

Linnet.
